Big. Nothing subtle about this one. Don’t pop this to sit around and sip. Highly recommend some food to accompany your enjoyment. Opened slow ox for 2 hours and the nose was still dominated by the 15% alcohol. Spice, dark fruit on the nose. Palate to match with dark chocolate, licorice, pepper, tobacco and minerality combine to provide a gripping finish lasting for days. Excellent wine. Not timid or holding back in any way.

... Zum Rehrücken?! Tag zwei zum Rumpsteak. Ein wenig seriöser. Rote Frucht, seidig und gut 92-93?!

Been working through this case for a decade plus. Tomato paste, olive and dusty earth nose. Palate shows some raisin but also more black olive, tapande. Not a profile I consume often but none the less quite expressive and enjoyable.

This wine still needs 3 hours in the decanter, and best at 4 hours. Aromas of dried, dark fruit, cinnamon, and some cedar. On the palate think black: there is plenty of raisin, blackberry, black tea, a bit of black olive, earthy tones, and some black pepper. There is also a thin layer of herb - predominantly bay leaf, maybe some oregano. Remains tannic. Full bodied, long finish. Complex.

Scents of roasted herbs of Provence and bay leaf with a generous soaking of sweet lavender oils. Flavors of black figs, dried plums and raisins, Moroccan spices and tea leaves, fresh tobacco, and a lengthy licorice finish. Slightly smokey and woodsy. This is a massive wine and just now entering peak maturity.

Serré, long, brut de coffre. 92+

Commanderie des Costes du Rhone - Fall 2022 Kick-off (Claud): This was just big and after a bunch of northern rhone it stands out quite a bit. Lots of alcohol and more intense in style with dark red fruits. The thing that made me like it though is there is a crispness here to that fruit. It's not all over-ripe or gloshy (not a word, but it conveys the point). I wonder if with some time this won't be rather wonderful.

Dark red fruits, smoke, cocoa, licorice, and underbrush hit your nose. But it is on the palate, due to its layers of flamboyant, lusciously-textured black raspberries, black cherry, and chocolate that seal the deal. This is quite ripe, but there is nothing overripe about it. Hedonistic in style, this is drinking superbly today. Do not bother decanting. This is fully developed and ready to go. Pop, pour, and enjoy. Drink 2022-2029.

Decanted for two hours. Black cherry, smoke, roast meats, herbs and a little barnyard. This is full bodied, layered with a long finish. Now in an early phase of maturity it’s drinking pretty well and nothing showing the overripe character of some 2007s

{Magnum, purchased on release, opened for monthly tasting group after tasting of white Burgs not from Chassagne, Puligny or Meursault} Ripe, delicious, smoky black and red fruits, hints of licorice and beautiful tannins. Very attractive wine, will hold in this format and evolve. Despite the year not at all hot.

Perfect as the last 2 bottles I had. I will say on night 2 this developed overpowering licorice/fig notes which I'm not a huge fan of. I will make sure to drink this on night 1 moving forward.

Very sophisticated and elegant! Has developed nicely since last tasted three years ago. No evident heat despite the vintage. Seamless layers of gorgeous fruit and delicate overall balance. Simply a great C9P!

{From magnum, cellared since release, last tried ~ 5 years ago; perfect fill} Am with D'Artagnan on this wine. Crushed red and black fruits on nose, black fruits > red on palate, some gaminess and fine tannins. Not particularly complex but very gourmand! Despite the ripe year, wine is in balance and not hot. Drink or hold for another 5 years in this format; will clearly reach 20 years of age in good shape.

Probably a bit over the hill. There was still plenty of weight and body, but the fruit had gone, replaced by a less attractive burnt funkiness. Lacked structure, perhaps unsurprisingly for such a warm, ripe vintage. Will try another bottle soon.

92-93+ pts

Big rich and sweet: structured like nectar with tannin. Strawberry and raspberry. Has acidity groaning under the weight of the fruit. Still young, only a touch of leather. Oak vanilla. Long and complex.

This wine was overwhelming on it's own, but was incredible with our duck breast over fried barley (like fries rice, but with barley). A big CdP (ABV 15%) with dark fruit that was integrated nicely with leather and Southern Rhone spices, with tastes of raisens on the finish.

Pop and pour and wow. No need for a decant. The early glasses were actually the best. Amazing depth of fruit. Will hold up for a few more years but why wait, enjoy.

Notes of blackberry, black tea, tobacco/smoke, licorice/camphor, rose petals, and roasted herbs. A little hot on the nose, but not distracting. Needs a good 2 hour decant to soften and open up.

Mature and ready to go !! A wonderful, classic CDP. All the black and red fruits one would expect along with some dried fruit. Leather, clove, strawberry and red cherries on the nose. Full bodied, rich and loaded with garrigue and smooth tannins. Concentrated and full bodied. Enjoy !!

Dark red towards black; lightly smoked licorice, roses; quite powerful, spices, slightly harsh / tannic, rich body, licorice, masculine; a bit unbalanced I believe, perhaps to be solved by air (I did not decant) or time (?)

This was even a bit better than the last one from last year. Gamey, rich and decadent, almost port-like. Flamboyant and brimming with oodles of rich racy flavors. Singing like the bird on the label. Worth seeking out.

Over the last few years this wine has becomes beautifully integrated and smooth. Big black fruit still exists with leather, earthiness and typical southern Rhone spice flavors. While the attack and mid-palate is great, we are not digging the raisiny finish as much. Our feeling is there will be some bottle variations at this point, but based on this bottle - drink up.

After a two hour decant this wine has finally turned the corner. For many years it has been a bit monolithic while showing promise. This time it opened up more, showing better balance and more complexity. The nose is black currant jam, smoked meat and tobacco with a touch of heat. The palate shows black and red fruits, smoked meats, herbs and spices. There is a nice layering of flavor and increased earthy and complex notes compared to the last time I drank this. The structure of the wine remains big with a long finish but it is clear to me this will likely evolve and get better with time now.

Good - not great. Solid and not to overly hot as so many 2007 has shown. This is much more balanced than most of the other from the vintage that I have tasted - more towards the classical profile. Smoke and dens dark fruits with some fine herbs. High alcohol unfortunately brings the impression down. Nice.

I am by no means a southern Rhône fan but this is my best bottle Yet. Still showing plum elements but as air penetrates I get the olive, bacon, black stone and earthen elements that make Rhône’s Rhône. Consumed over two days. My 6th bottle over 6 years. The plastic berry notes have subsided finally.

Popped and poured. This is a very big wine that needs decanting and time. The nose is blackberry and roasted meats and requires a bit of coaxing. The palate is very structured with substantial tannins which have some rough edges. The flavors are complex with black fruits, herbs, roasted meats and spices. This will get better over time.

Decanted 1 hour. Dark garnet, some suspended sediment. Subtle bouquet showing macerated dark cherry. Slow burn entry, builds gradually to an acidic, dark cherry dominated mid-palate. Full throated fruit and sweetness, with spice and fine tannins supporting a long final. Tinge of heat, and some nice oak adding complexity on the end.
Big, balanced and long. I am less enamoured of the style than I once was - technically little to fault here but one has to enjoy the big red idiom to fully appreciate this.

A rather brutal, but at the same time lovely and beautiful wine. The 2007 CndP Cuvée de la Reine des Bois reveals a cascade of wonderful Grenache perfume with morellos, sweet liquorice, Asian spice, saddle leather, flowers and tones of garrigue. The palate adds to te experience with a close to perfect integration between fruit, acidity and tannins. All components are in place and they sing a rather harmoniuous song tonight Tannins are rather silky and whispers about age marching forward. As I have written before about this effort it contains a lot of everything, maybe except from heat which is totally abscent. A lovely lovey wine, which has several more years to go in the cellar - sadly this was my very last bottle of the case I bought. (score is 97+)

At West London Wine School's 2007 Rhone Superstar Tasting. Clear purple to garnet rim. Tar, rose and white pepper nose. Dark chocolate, mint, stewed red fruit, spices. 30-40 second finish. Starting to show notes of secondary fruit and evolvement. Dense and powerful, but elegant and balanced at the same time. Benefits from being served at no higher temperature than 16 degrees, above that the alcohol and some green tones are evident. Still this is another example of the great 2007 C9P vintage!

The 2007 Reine des Bois CndP has lost its rather brutish baby fat. Tonight, the wonderful Grenache perfume exhibits massive and lovely morellos, classy liquorice, Asian spice, wet saddle leather and a clean overall impression. The palate adds nicely to the experience with superb integration and silky soft tannins. To summarize, this wine certainly still has a lot of everything but it has almost "cooled down" and is more elegant and refined compared to what I remembered. It has a long way to go in the cellar if given the chance. A truly brilliant Chateaneuf-du-Pape, except from heat which is totally absent. A wonderful wine - without the slightest doubt!

2007 CdP retro (with sushi food pairing) (Streeterville, Chicago): Nose: The nose is open and aromatic with black cherries, chocolate, violets, raspberries, herbs, spice tones, and some licorice. There is medium depth and while it favors a bigger and riper side, there is balance as well.
Taste: Medium/full bodied with medium tannins. The tannins are ripe and silky and while the feel has a plushness to it, the mid-palate and finish are a bit thin with chocolate, spice tones, black cherries, violets, raspberries, and some alcohol.
Overall: This was a very good Chateauneuf du Pape. If the palate was more complete, this would be fantastic. Still, it is an excellent wine that is drinking quite well right now.

Hard to rate this as it feels quite closed in many respects, but that bodes well, Suggesting it's age-worthy; this feels pretty serious. Full-bodied, somewhat tight, has a rustic, cedar tone. Nothing ordinary or simple here. White pepper on the finish. Still feels young. Sweet spot may not be for another five years.
Similar profile on the 2nd day. The wine is intriguing with a lot of potential complexity but its all still,a bit hidden or held back just now; try again in five years.

Enjoyed this wine over an eight course meal that consisted mostly of beef with some seafood mixed in. The wine poured a deep ruby and expressed a lush mouthfeel. The nose placed me on a rocky river after a fresh dose of rain and it was earthy mushroom on the palate. A great wine that stands up well against a mineraly rich meal.

This is a fairly forward, new world styled CDP and tonight it was drinking exceptionally well, with very good depth and concentration to its dark, red cherry fruit. There's lots of earth, garrigue and tobacco notes making an appearance, with some subtle hints of menthol peeking through. The finish is long and satisfying and ends with some black pepper. All in all, quite excellent.

A great reunion with friends George and Jim, both who appreciate great wine. Did not take notes, but the wine was quite similar to when last tasted on 6-20-2014 when I indicated: "A phenomenal wine in all respects. Complex aromas of blackberry, creme de cassis, raspberry, licorice, black pepper, herbs de Provence and well integrated but not overbearing oak. Flavors are much the same. Dense, rich and highly concentrated fruit; viscous and somewhat jammy in the mouth. Tannins are soft and velvety. Great balance and structure. A long lingering and velvety finish. The wine has years ahead for appreciation, but quite drinkable and enjoyable now. Going to be difficult for me to keep my hands off this wine!"

A rather brutal, but at the same time pleasant wine. The 2007 CndP Cuvée de la Reine des Bois exhibits a wonderful Grenache perfume full of morellos, sweet liquorice, Asian spice, saddle leather and subtle tones of garrigue. The palate follows through in the same classy way with a very nice integration between fruit, acidity and tannins. The latter being silky and adding pleasantly to the overall complexity. This wine is surely not for the faint hearted, since it is rather brutal in its intensity and power. But having said this, there is nothing wrong with the integration and the balance. There is just a lot of everything, except from heat which is totally absent. A wonderful wine, which has several more years to go in the cellar.

This is one fascinating wine. We decanted it and let it rest for a short while. Too short as it happened. This wine initially was quite strange with its nose of hard coal and dark licorice. It had a taste somewhat reminiscent V8 vegetable juice with some fruit juice. With patience and swirling in the glass, this wine really became special. The nose showed lots of dark red fruits, some smoke and spices. It tasted very pure, but decidedly unlike any other 2007 CdP we've tried. It fills the mouth with dark fruit, tannins, and spice. Can probably last another 10 years.

A difficult bottle for me. Dark ruby color. Initial nose of plastics, cherry fruit, tar and minerals. Overtime additional berry started to peak through but light and not very present. On the palate a tight layering of coal, iron and underbrush. The makings are there and perhaps this wine is going through a phase. I can't seem to find the silky texture others note. Will definitely let the bottle rest another year before trying again.

Second time trying, remainder of Coravin poured bottle. Nose is rich with rouge make up, rose stem, and some cherry fruit peaking thru. Palate is tight with high mineral content. Single glass, Coravin. Color is dark and lush. Intriguing and difficult to pin down nose - burnt rubber, touch of lush fruit, old leather and horse hair. Fumes of rubbing alcohol as well. Palate is tight, more smoke/dried meat, hard cherry, roast coffee, mint, and garrigue. Again almost overbearing alcohol. Not a wine for me in its current state, hopefully this mellows. No rating.

A lot of lush and sweet ripe dark forest fruits, cherries and spiciness in the bouquet. Same on the palate, still a bit lactic, a lot of sweetness but also good acidity, a lot of garrigue as well. The tannin is round and soft, but overall the wine is still a bit too young. You must be a fan of the modern, concentrated and sweet style, but if you are this is great stuff. Wait for another 3 - 4+ years.

Tasting of the Utrecht Wine Society (Utrecht, NL): Again a whopping 15% ABV; a classic blend of the traditional varieties, with Grenache (80%), Mourvèdre (10%) and Vaccarèse (5%) as the main components. Modern, sweet-and-sour, vegetal, tannic, lactic, toasty oak, lacks depth of flavour, disjointed, obvious, unimpressive. Overripe and unharmonious to me; I guess I just don't get it, others seem to be very impressed.

Casa de Gilbo (Boston): Decanted 6 hours, consumed the six hours following. The nose was full of blueberry, graphite, garrigue, licorice and black tea. It was stellar and evolved gracefully over the course of the night. The palate, on the other hand was a dark brooding cauldron of future awesome. While the parts were all there now, this wine is a decade away at least from reaching full potential. Notes of graphite, fig paste, dark berries, tar and licorice sailed through the long finish. It was fully balanced with no signs of heat and the texture was truly something to behold with silky tannins leading the finish. 95 tonight with lots of room to grow over the next decade.

Medium ruby. Expressive, somewhat hot/alcoholic and slightly oxidative (getting better though after being open for a while) nose of red berries, cherry, licorice, cloves and garrigue, very grenache, mourvedre not much coming through. On the palate very fruity with soft tannins and acidity providing freshness/bitterness to balance the ripe fruit, a bit alcoholic but not overly sweet for the heat of the vintage. Reminds me of Clos des Papes in style/aroma. I prefer the more black fruit/mourvedre type of CdP but that is just personal taste. A very good wine nevertheless, in my view no problem to drink now as the tannins are very silky already.

Wonderful wine! Dark nose of roasted spices, earth, blueberries and dark cherries and some licorice. The palate is very dark, with persistent black fruit, good tannic grip, a touch of oak and spices.

I love the texture of this rich, velvety, kirsch, black raspberry, pepper, anise and earthy wine. It's long, deep and concentrated, but there is a touch of oak, that should become better integrated with time in this modern styled Chateauneuf du Pape.

A very beautiful CdP. The nose is dominated by dark fruits, spices, some smoke, charcoal and english licorice. The wine is filled with ripe blackberries, dark cherries, licorice and good amounts of tannin. Still very young, but one of the more accessible young Reine des Bois.

Dark purple with a very dense, jammy nose filled with dark cherry, currant and exotic spice. The palate is big and tannic that halts everything at the onset, like an electric shock, but then gradually dissipates evenly all throughout the mouth leaving a lasting impression of big, ripe dark cherry, black currant jam, raspberry, and a hint of tar on a silky texture. The experience is very refreshing, like a kid whose just had his grape juice right after a long hot day under the sun. "Aahhh. "Drink now with 1-hr of decanting or best between 2014 to 2030.

BW/WE Annual Riesling Dinner (Golden Beach Seafood Restaurant, Changi Golf Club): Young, but good. Back to a more modern interpretation with this one. 85% Grenache here, with a smattering of Syrah and Clairette I think. However, unlike the ubder-sweet and overly massive 2007 Janasse Chaupin we had earlier in the week, this was actually showing some semblance of drinkability. The nose was at least recognisably CdP, with sweet plums, cherries and berries showing alongside some earth and incense. More of the same on the palate - lots of sweet fruit in the form of plums and blackberries, pretty yummy, but there was also discernably clean purity to the fruit, and a nice freshness wed to a velvety structure that gave the wine a classy feel. The finish had a nice length, and felt very open and generously fruit-forward. All in all, not exactly my favourite style, but thjs was an objectively good wine, and I am glad to have a bottle in the cellar. I think it will make a really solid wine when its time comes. When exactly I find it darn hard to figure out with these modern CdPs, but I suspect that this will be quite forward drinking and would glady hazard trying it again in another 4-5 years.

K&L Rhone Tasting Fall 2010 (K&L San Francisco): Typical grenache nose, flavors of beef, blue and red fruit, "interesting" mid-palate, good acidity, spicy tannic finish with a touch of heat. Good, but seems overpriced.

This, like many 07 Chateauneuf, pushes the boundary of ripeness and alcohol so far as I’m concerned but I must say this is an enjoyable, slippery, cheeky little number that slides down rather quickly. On the nose there are ripe blackberry and blackcurrant fruits that are threaded with Provencal herbs, a little meat and tar and with air an intoxicating whiff of violets becomes prevalent. In the mouth it is round, low acid and creamy with very intense fruit flavours that remain fresh without turning to raisin. It finishes with authority and there’s some chewy tannins and a pleasant savoury imprint once the wine is swallowed.

Still in a very primary state, with a limpid, bright ruby color. Nose is dense with sappy red fruit -- could be sour cherries if they were very ripe, or perhaps red plums. Hints of all sorts of spices but at this stage, very unevolved. On the palate, clean, long, quite flavorful, good acidity and surprisingly structured. Will make a wonderful wine in a few years. I'll drink mine 2 or 3 years from now; I don't see this as a very long term keeper. But if ever I've been wrong, this could be the CDP that proves it (drop me an email in 25 years to let me know...)
[Day two, under nitrogen]: Quick update; with air, the wine has gained density and the nose is showing more: now I'm finding licorice, violets, creosote, tapenade. More material on the palate too, but on the down side, a slight harshness in the midpalate and the very ripe fruit has a slight pruney aspect. Bodes well for short term aging but I'm still a bit doubtful about the long term (because of the risk of a stewed-prunes scenario)

My first 2007 CDP. Very dark purple/black. Huge nose, both modern with loads of dark fruit and charcoal, but nicely balanced with hints of more traditional barnyard, toast, and red fruits. Massive on the palate. Right now, a bit too much plum and fig, though if those can recede a bit this thing will be awesome, as there is a laundry list of flavors that emerge via some patience. Smoke, licorice, violet, blueberry, etc. Just hope the size shrinks a bit with time, allowing this to become a bit more balanced and tamed.

Great - very refined nose - very pure cassis elements. Also noticable oak in this wine and also a touch of burnt rubber. On the palate, round ripe and beautiful balance with the tannins pretty well hiding at the moment - although they will be there. Ne oak is also noticeable on the palate.

2007 Southern Rhone Tasting (Bell's): Didn't show as well as I hoped. A lot of alcohol on the nose combined with pepper, coffee and rhubarb. The heat in the alcohol was a bit concerning and it really dominated this wine. Gotta hope that the alcohol will begin to mellow out over time. This was my third worst wine of the night.

95-97 pts

Dark red color with a bluish hue. Cool, yet ripe cherry on the nose backed up by spices á la Herpes des Provence. On the palate there is lots of boiled and candied red fruit, raspberries and cherries, with great concentration and intensity. A powerhouse backed with lively acidity and tannins. After a bit of air it broadens out on the midpalate and finish with earthy undergrowth and rustic notes of iron and black ink. Build for minimum 5 years of cellaring.

Deep, rich & voluptuous.
Surprisingly fruity and sumptuous given the 16 years of age. Plummy.
Herby, slightly spicy undertow adds complexity.
Fine tannins balanced with pleasant acidity.
Really good stuff, eminently quaffable with lots of depth and nuance.

But it is on the palate, due to its layers of flamboyant, lusciously-textured black raspberries, black cherry, and chocolate that seal the deal.

I initially scored this a little lower but in comparison to the other CdPs while still on the primary side this was already so complex. 93-94+

Starting to show notes of secondary fruit and evolvement. Dense and powerful, but elegant and balanced at the same time. Benefits from being served at no higher temperature than 16 degrees, above that the alcohol and some green tones are evident. Still this is another example of the great 2007 C9P vintage!

2007 DOMAINE de la MORDOREE REINE des BOIS CHATEAUNEUF de PAPE- 80% Grenache, 20% Mourvedre, Cinsault, Syrah, Counoise and Vacarese; some mild earthiness in the nose along with liquorice, smoke and black currant; all continued on with plum and blueberry flavours coming in as well; it was such a contrast following 2 Barolos, but it held its own.

Deep ruby, looks like a west coast syrah, black fruit with some spice, mod. tannins (on day 2), long finish; I will wait a couple of years before trying again as the potential is apparent

In the bouquet dark forest fruits and cherries, garrigue and also some celery and soy. On the palate the same fruits, chocolate, some sweetness and also good acidity. The tannin still has a firm bite. Although the palate is very lush and showing some tertiary flavors, on the palate the wine is still very powerful. Beautiful wine. 94 – 95

On the palate a tight layering of coal, iron and underbrush. The makings are there and perhaps this wine is going through a phase. I can't seem to find the silky texture others note. Will definitely let the bottle rest another year before trying again.
