For New Years with porchetta, for which it's a fine pairing. On opening, very delicate. That disassembled old wine character. Over the next two hours it picked up weight...color...flavor and made for a very nice glass of wine. Yellow fruit and honey, but dry with a little bit of petrol. Fine acidity. Probably won't get better, but I imagine these will provide pleasure for at least another decade.

Light golden. Petrol and slight mustiness blew off to reveal light botrytis, smoke, and stone fruit. Medium to full bodied, great feel, gloriously dry. As before, an ageless marvel that is full of stone and great acidity. Monumental wine.

One of two remaining bottles of a case purchased upon release. I can't think of a better opportunity to open this than on Thanksgiving Day within such a challenging year coming to a close. Much to be grateful for when so many have faced hardship.
An amber treasure lying dormant except for the disruption of a housing move here and there. Tonight we are drinking the bottle in two flights -- as an aperitif before dinner and then with dessert.
Still a bit closed even with decanting. A nectarine nose is most prominent with hints of bitter orange rind, especially once the wine enters the mouth. White hibiscus and apple blossom flowers. Quite round and full. I keep coming back to the orange rind, which in the zen of things is either distracting... or attracting my attention. Such is the art and beauty of an aged wine.
Further notes following dinner and an hour or so in the decanter.

Another Wine Slog Across France; 11/2/2019-11/13/2019 (Paris, Alsace, Burgundy, Encore Paris): Tasted next to 1990 Clos Ste. Hune. This was lighter in color and more subdued on the nose with much less petrol. Utterly dry. Dense and powerful with strong (actually crazy) lemon acidity and a good dollop of soil, yet less refined and complex than its stablemate. Incredible perstence and stamina over 3 hours. A marvel on its own, it was just edged out tonight by an all time great wine. Bottles in this condition could go another decade.
Second day-It has lost nothing but gained petrol. Still aromatic, the brisk acidity remains, and the citrus is even brighter. Incredible stuff.

Mostly 1989 Dinner (The Progress, San Francisco): Yellow, remarkably light for a dry wine of this age. Little in the way of high toned secondary aromas until open for several hours. Full body, bigger and denser than the Clos Ste. Hune per my recollection. Dry, peach flavors, late lemon, fantastic acidity and soil, great length. Iconic wine that feels as though it still could withstand another decade of aging. Remarkable in every way.

Perfect lemon colour, lustrous, beautiful. Ripe citrus fruits, lemons limes and grapefruit. Some slight 'age' on the fruit adds depth and richness, but honey and honeysuckle florals finish it off nicely. Supple, fleshy texture, lovely mouthfeel. Lemony, honeysuckle, orange rind, mineral zest and sherbet. Beautiful balance, timeless, with a long long clean finish. Damn good.

Delicious. Incredible balance, depth. Incredibly fresh and lively still but with wonderful complexity--smokey, slightly herbal, earthy mushroom quality, a bit of tropical fruit left too. A top notch example of the best of Alsace. Served with roast guinea fowl, cabbage and spaetzle.

Canele: deep golden color; at first slight oxy notes, but opened up to reveal slight nutty notes, honey, marzipan, burnt/caramelized pie crust-nectarine notes; mid-weight, a bit light in mid palate, but makes it lighter on its feet and more elegant. Complex and long. Perfect match for onion tart.

(thanks to EB, drunk with LES, PA, PLG at Kitchen on Common. Perfect fill, cork fine pulled with Durand. Pop and pour). Fantastic nose, light yellow color, lime, stones, peaches, very full flavors and sleekly big fruit. Very long and persistent finish, indeed mouth watering. Precise wine yet full of exotic scents and flavors. Sure wish I had some of this juice! By recollection only Clos St Hune (also thanks to EB) outdoes this. Drinking really well now, no reason to rush to drink though. Wow.

Two visitors, three birthdays and seventeen wines from all over. (ABA Turkish Restaurant): From magnum and as Kool & the Gang would say, "she's fresh (fresh,) exciting!" No real sign of petrol in this bottle, but it's full of its typical lime character with plenty of stoney mineral and light peach notes. Beautiful balance and depth here with age having rounded the edges off the acid spine, giving it a friendlier mouthfeel. A-/A.

Mid yellow in the glass. Attractive and slightly rich nose of peach, lime and hints of petrol and apricot. Lovely dense mouthfeel with clear freshness and minerality. Approaching maturity but with 10+ years in hand, this was not profound but at the same time hugely enjoyable ****-****1/2

Ifune in NYC (Frankie & Johnnie's Steakhouse, NYC): Fantastic showing, with a complex bend of flavors, such as baked apple, lemon peel, petrol, minerals and baked peaches. Seeming round in the mouth with nice buffering sap, but the acids really mop up the richness. Very clean and precise with an enduring, lip-pursing, acidic bite. Fabulous.

deep lemon yellow with hints of green tinges, lemon peel, hint of green apple, and wet stones, there is also a floral aroma dancing through it.Palate is dry with excellent acidity, long my only critisism would be that it could be a little bit more aromatic, in fact this wine is still young.

1990-themed dinner (The American Club): Served blind after the DP, and oh, this was so classy. Tell-tale notes of petrol pointed to aged Riesling, together with scents of herbs and very delicate (light) notes of tropical fruits. Bone dry on the palate, it had that stony minerality, bright acidity intermixed with notes of apples, a bit of nectarines which all glided across the palate so elegantly and weightlessly, which culminated in a finish not quite as long as the DP, but still very respectable. Great!

Pale gold, nice lustre. Deep citrus and honey fragrance, plump and tending towards tropical fruit. Pure and intense. A faint hint of spice, zesty minerality. Ripe citrus fruits, honey, with a slightly spicy dried herb and mineral edge. Has softened but far more vibrant than 24 years might suggest. Fruit is still to the fore, and not a hint of kerosene, just a little oxidative spice coming through. Not the best bottle I've had (cork was saturated, possibly had some impact) but still a good one.

Bought on release and cellared. Perfect level. Opened with dinner. Rich in colour for a Riesling, smells glorious; meadows, stones, Alsace. Great balance of richness and purity, butter and minerality. Cuts through Jamon Iberico with perfect acidity. Caught between adolescence and maturity the 1990 vintage really suits this wine, albeit intense. A wine to while your life way with.

Elegant, almost rubbery nose with very delicate and nice fruit aromas. This is actually complex with tender yellow fruit, dried, elegant herbs, and pure citrus fruit. Perfect development, but no disturbing mature notes of oil boiler! A palate loaded with mineral and grinded stones. Elegant and pure. Absolute balance and a tremendous grip. The acidity and finish goes on and on. Medium-fullish body. Nice austere dryness. Just a hint of petrol (15%) Splendid. We actually thought this younger (!) than the 2001 Trimbach CFE tasted blind at the same time. A very positive surprise. We tasted this 4 or 5 years ago and thought it one of the best Riesling's tasted. This keeps together in a fantastic way. Is it indestructible? And it is so much more elegant than a typical Alsace Riesling. The vintage must be one of the best. Or did Trimbach make wine in a much more austere way back in those days?

Tasted blind, this wine had a light yellow center and clear rims. The high- intensity nose of apple cider, citrus, pineapple, and petrol was unusal and interesting.
The wine tasted notably different in the mouth than in the nose. It didn't show the apple cider and was quite crisp with a long white stone finish.
An attractive wine (close to 93 points) that is in the zone. Enjoy

Simply fantastic bottle. Slight gold color. What a medley of chrysanthemum flowers, lanolin, fresh paint, honey, hint of petrol, etc. etc. etc. A tiny tang of sour acidity on the finish, but nothing that threw the balance out of whack. Drank over a few hours with Austrian food. Can't wait for the next bottle...

Old Young, Old Young (San Francisco): Deep yellow. Peach, lemon and subtle petrol. Rich yet bone dry, fantastic acidity and minerality, great length. Quintessential dry Alsatian Riesling. Mega-Pointer Dinner (Yuan Wei Deep-Sea Garoupa, Serangoon Road): Wow. This was ridiculously good - one of the best dry Rieslings I have had for a some time. Opened 4 hours before serving, it showed an almost understated nose that slowly unfurled with little drifts of beeswax and honey, a lovely waft of perfumey chamomile, orange blossoms maybe, and a touch of meadow flowers, and then a core of peach, apricot and red apple fruit aromas, all drizzled with some aged-Riesling kerosene notes. With time, a little stream of stoney minerality started coming out alongside the fruit and flowers. Really complex and entrancing, yet somehow always subtle, understated and very intriguing. The palate was flat-out amazing too. I cannot quite began to explain this - it was again understated, yet clearly a dropdead gorgeous wine at the same time, showing a mindblowing amount of complexity as it gently unfolded across the mouth in deep, rich layers of green apples and pears, kissed by sunnier dried apricots and nectarines, all ringed at the edges by that little touch of that kerosene again. Here and there, the fruit was wreathed with a lovely dried flower nuance and a rather inexplicable note of fresh, bright strawberries on the midpalate. With time, some sweet lemons started floating, alongside a nice bit of spice sprinkled across the length of the wine. So much going on. This was rich, melting, juicy - clearly a child of its vintage - yet it was so well integrated and perfectly balanced that there was almost a lightness, a zen-ness, to it in spite of its weight and complexity. The wine had an incredible finish too, pulling away into a bone dry, super stony, minerally tail that was chased by floaty, flowery chamomile accents. Incredibly long, perfectly dry, yet wonderfully delicious. This was nuts. I would suggest giving it some air and not to serve it too chilled, because that muted the wine slightly when it was first poured. Other than that, this was a truly complete wine at quite a brilliant place now. Fantastic stuff. WS96 when first released. Unusually, this deserved every bit of that.

Drank alongside a 1999. Hard to believe this wine is more than 20 years old. Still young, with sublime elegance and balance. The acid is the hero here - bracing, strong and linear, and acting as the backbone upon which the wine is built. There are layers and layers of complexity here; underneath the citrus and minerals lies floral notes along with exotic spices and honey. I would not find it hard to believe that this wine could last another 20 years.

Half bottle. Medium yellow. Great aromatics-petrol, peach, and guava. Terrifically focused and taut with great acidity but a cushion of fruit and flesh. Absolutely pristine even from this small format. I only wish that the '89 had been sound so that we could have compared these 2 legendary vintages.

Nice straw colour, the usual petroleum nose. In the mouth I found a bit short, not delivering what I've seen from a recent bottle of 2001, 375th anniversary wine. Nevertheless very nice and super dry, fruit holding up well, good long mineral aftertaste.

From magum, and absolutely stunning! Powerful pear, citrus and white fruited flavours surrounded by developed smoky, honeyed and fusel notes and the whole package rests over a bed of stones. There's the typical Trimbach precision and focus here, fantastic acidity keeping it really fresh and making it seem surprisingly youthful for a 20 year old wine with really impressive length. Just fantastic Riesling!

Dinner with Stephen South: Meyer-Fonne, two Huet, Trimbach, Cune, Jamet & Soldera. (Il Corso): Golden colored with mineral, lightly nutty and citrus aromas. Good length and weight, but it's really starting to show its age. It's softened and has taken on aged nutty flavors to go along with the usual citrus profile. Dry, but ripe finish. I'd start to drink up. Fill and capsule was perfect, btw. A-.

Trimbach Frederic Emile Retrospective--1979 to 2001 (Absinthe Restaurant, San Francisco): Light yellow, in fact lighter than either the '95 or '96 in the same flight. Some sulfur, but this dissipates. Like the '01 in that it delivers amazing intensity for an ethereally light bodied wine. Freakishly fresh with perfectly integrated acidity. This is not about the fruit, but the peach tones grow and expand over time. No petrol, but this was the first wine in the line up to yield the barest hints of maturity-amazing! Absolutely wondrous-pristine, vibrant, and possessing the material and balance to age several more decades. A jaw dropping wine.

Alsace Lunch @ The Ledbury- i will caveat this with the fact that i drink very little wine from the Alsace but this was a very good bottle of wine and i wish i had bought more of it. golden color, on the nose a bit of diesel, grass and honey. in three or four years, and over the course of this time the wine has really blossomed and begun to drink at its zenith. in the mouth it had a zippy, lively acidity and a taste of minerals and stones meshing well with some very clean light fruit flavors. the wine was pure and very long. really enjoyed this bottled acidity

A medium golden color with honey and explosive beautiful petrol on the nose. Lemons and green apple Jolly Ranchers. A fabulous nose. The palate had the trademark Trimbach acidity, that I think still needs years to mellow. Slate and petrol, with lovely minerality. Very good on the palate, but for my taste, I only wish the palate had given what the nose hinted at. 91 pts. I'd love to visit this again in a decade to see what happens.

Hello and welcome to some well-aged Alsatian Riesling. This thing almost stole the show against some beautiful old French reds. The color is deep golden straw. The nose shows a significant tanky element, lemon, wet stone, and spice...with an almost meaty component rearing its head as well. The palate reveals juicy honeyed lemon, minerals, touch of diesel, and a good acidity. This wine is thick and delicious.

Christie's Dinner at Charlie Trotter's (Charlie Trotter's, Chicago): Light straw color. Aromas of petrol and gooseberries. Still very young-tasting, with intense, sharp flavors of green apple, lime and chalk, accented with an herbal undertone. Bone dry and a little tart. It cut through the dish a little too cleanly. I preferred the '94 Prum WS Auslese GK with the food. I would recommend holding this wine for another 3-5 years. Seems like a good value when compared to the ever-climbing price of the Clos Ste.-Hune.

Immediately upon opening the aromas were evident of peachs, wet stones, flint and lemon. The initial mouthfeel was acidic (but balanced) with tart lemon, pink grapefruit and a hint of sweetness. The finish was long and pleasant with characteristics of "lemon drops". With the food the spiciness of the wine was more evident. It held up well to fairly spicy food. This wine is showing well but has many good years ahead of it.

Wow.

No real sign of petrol in this bottle, but it's full of its typical lime character with plenty of stoney mineral and light peach notes. Beautiful balance and depth here with age having rounded the edges off the acid spine, giving it a friendlier mouthfeel. A-/A.

Seeming round in the mouth with nice buffering sap, but the acids really mop up the richness. Very clean and precise with an enduring, lip-pursing, acidic bite. Fabulous.

Enjoy

This is not about the fruit, but the peach tones grow and expand over time. No petrol, but this was the first wine in the line up to yield the barest hints of maturity-amazing!
