Bottle opened four hours in advance lunch through The Durand. Soft and shaky cork of medium quality. Apparently when you have plans to dominate the world, you have to save on little things like that. Priorities are priorities. Violet colour with watery edges. Elegant aromas of ripe blueberries, forest scrub, thyme, spices such as black pepper or cloves but without too much precision. Don’t look for complexity here either. On the palate it shows a texture typical of a light wine, without silkiness, with an impressive acidity and a really scarce length. Even without great defects it is a bottle that has left me very cold. Sorry. Just an ordinary second wine. That's all. 89.7 score? Only being very optimistic.

Simple yet elegant! Glossy ruby red in colour! Clean and supple, smooth on the palate! Lacking a bit of excitement and to me, behaving like a quiet boy in the classroom.

This bottle was in amazing condition. I was surprised by the complexity and freshness of the nose with layers of primary, secondary and tertiary notes. On the palate, tannin was soft and rounded but still young and with flavor notes of black berries and some sweetness. The wine developed it's complexity until about two hours and went down hill but it was quite impressive to taste this wine that I had cellared for almost twenty years. I would say the wine is at it's peak and can be enjoyed for another five years or so.

Fourth of July wine. Everyone really liked this and agreed was ready to drink - not nuanced but nice kind of aged berries, maybe just a little tar. Was a fun one to try.

Nice bouquets with dark fruits and earthiness, blackberries, currants, pure, refined tannins, minerals, however, mouth feel is a bit dry and on acidic side, complex, but not much of nuances of its big brother, drinks very well, aftertaste is pleasant and long.

Excellent now, at its peak. Complex nose with notes of black fruits, cigar, toasted, graphite etc. Superb equilibrium, good freshness and very very fine tannins, a sign of its origin. Medium density but good length. Improved over days and did not vanish ( vacuum pumped). A lot of pleasure now.

Medium intensity, bouquet: ripe cranberry, fresh sweet black cherry, cedar, pine, stone, granite, asian spice, oleander. Complex in ripe fruit, fresh vegetal yet old earth/mineral that lingers on the nose. Fine, dusty, medium tannins, high acidity, long finish. Wonderful with bacon wrapped tenderloin, bbq haloumi. Acid and tannins prominent at first giving way to full fruit basket. Cuts through fatty food. Maybe age another 6-18 months. A real treat, source of great conversation.

still quite fresh and a good length finish. Complex perfumed nose. Very delicate as to be expected, both from this vintage and this wine. Drink soon. Is it good value? Not at today's prices. But if you bought it when it was released, then it is truly excellent value. Sadly those days are long behind us.

Just ok. Terrible QPR. The only reason to buy is to impress someone with the name. Decent aromatics, short finish. This was in no way bad, it just didn't impress in any way. Would have guessed blind a much less expensive Bordeaux.

Aerated 2 hours. Concentrated color with a little bricking at the rim. Notes of red fruit, leather, a bit of smoke and raisins at the onset. Not a big wine but more elegant in taste with a bit of tannin. More integrated than my last bottle 3 years ago.

PnP'd. Instantly dynamic with earthy dark fruits and graphite, attractive juicy red fruit core emerging we sipped. One of the best 01's I've had lately. Well-stored bottles should improve/and or hold here over the next five years.

Eye: dark garnet, slightly flat in appearance but deep color. Nose: flat at first with hints of smoke and herbs. Opened up after 45 min to give dark fruit, slight vanilla, raisin scent. Palate: flinty at first with not much fruit and quick finish. After 45 min the cherries and dark fruit came to the fore with more balance and a medium finish. Elegant and subtle - nicely paired with roast filet of beef and also some aged Gouda cheese after dinner.

Second Sunday Group: 2000 Bordeaux (R&D's): Softed garnet color but no bricking just yet. In a word, elegant. Very floral and pretty with red fruit notes underneath. Medium-bodied and drinking very well with red fruit, forest floor and lavender flavors. Finishes with good length and balance. 92+ pts.

Lean and tart but still complex and decently long. Bright red fruit, cedar, oak, thyme, black olive. Not the most standard Pauillac profile. 5-10 year life ahead. Wait 5 on the next one.

Drinking really beautifully right now. Classic Bordeaux on the nose. On the palate, still a little tannic bite, with a focused core of fruit with maturing flavors. Not a large-scaled wine -- more on the elegant side, but still with some depth and richness. This is probably still near the beginning of its drinking window with many more good years to come.

Very good wine. Savoury nose with earthy aromas, leather, pencil shavings, cedar and red fruit compote. Fluid texture on the palate with nice refreshing bitter finish. Definitely ready but I would not hurry to drink up.
Bought on release for $28 and cellared. Excellent wine. A classic french bordeaux blend. Merlot shines in this one. Lovely nose of pencil shavings and currant. Tasty notes of currant, cranberry, mineral, slightly herbal. Nice and dry yet still 'juicy' - I kept coming back for more. Good acidity and only 12.5% alcohol. Short finish. Went great with tenderloin and salad with blue cheese dressing. Drank over 2 hours. Pop and poured. Best initially out of the gate. Drink now if you have them. I would not spend the current asking price on one of these though - that would be insane.

Maybe this doesn't have the power anymore like it had five years ago, but wow, this was silky soft and very tasty! I could really notice that this comes from a very respected house. Although not worth the current price, this is a very enjoyable wine. Got this as a present on our wedding day, and we drank it exactly seven years later, on our seventh anniversary! Wouldn't keep it much longer though.
In general not a lover of second wines, this one really is not too bad. Of course it still is completely overpriced (though prices for Lafite and Carruades came down quite a lot the last six or seven months).
Forgetting everything else (price, former hype), it is good stuff. Very compact, herbs, black tea, also some mint.
Nonetheless it would have been better to sell my bottles last year. But I did not have the heart to do that.
Slight tobacco on the nose, sour cherries and strong acid when entering the mouth. A certain silkiness comes through after the acidity disapears. Tannins appear after this (not alot). Good fruit, however, not long in the mouth. I enjoyed it very much.

Disappointing at this stage, despite the always attractive Pauillac aromatics. Lean and somewhat diluted on the palate with a rather short aftertaste. Does not live up to its pedigree,

The nose was pure Pauillac. Muted earthy sour berries. On the palate it hinted lean & then the fruit burst. Wonderfully full & perfectly integrated. Drink up & enjoy - it is ready but not past it imho. And pat yourself on the back if you bought it as a future. Decanted 5 hrs.

This was the third time I had this wine, and as I noticed in my previous note, it is fully mature and approaching overmaturity. On the nose it was less expressive than the previous bottles, but on the palate it was perfectly round, elegant and rich in the same time, a combination of traits found only in top class wines. It paired perfectly with a juicy, somewhat spicy steak and it was much more enjoyable with food than on its own. It surely justifies the 50 euros I paid for it when I bought it, but will fail to justify the three digit figure prices this label is commanding now.

Served blind, I immediately guessed Bordeaux, but from 1999 instead of 2001. Typical Pauillac nose with ink, ceddar, pencil shavings and cassis with intense barnyard. Medium-bodied with very soft, barely noticeable tannins, mature fruit and balancing acidity. Med/long aftertaste. Enjoyable, but fully mature now, so no further cellaring is suggested.

Evolved and forward, textbook Bordeaux nose with cedar, smoke, black fruit along some earthy and bretty notes. Complex. Elegant and multilayered in palate with refreshing acidity and medium- ripe and resolved fine grained tannins that balance light alcohol and body. Very smooth with supple structure but lacking mid-palate intensity. Definately drink up.

Classic Bordeaux nose. Smoky tannins, hints of leather and a touch of floral, everything well integrated and subtle. This is drinking beautifully right now. In a few more years this will collapse into the ashtray and tobacco profile which I personally do not like.

Ex-Icono, offen. (93/100)

Toronto Wine Cru - WineSpectator Off-Line Event (Crush Wine Bar, Toronto): October-22-2010 - Toronto Wine Cru - Wine Spectator Off-line tasting event. Maybe the great company (or the 11 wines tasted to this point) influenced my score. But I cannot see how this wine would score less than a 90, relative to other wines, particularly given its age. In fact, I have trouble giving this less than 92. So I beg to disagree with Grapestory / Cellartracker members on this one. This was one of the wines of the night.

Compared to the 2000 I tasted several months ago, this was signifficantly more evolved, especially on the palate, and showed less aromatic intensity. That said it was equally enjoyable thanks to its roundness, harmony, elegance and unmistakeble pedigree. Ruby. Very complex but low-key nose with graphite, red berry, cassis and forrest floor. Mid-bodied, perfectly round, balanced and harmonius with nice fruit, soft tanins and balancing acidity. Long finish. I suspect it will gain in aromatic complexity with aging. To drink now or over the next 10 years.

We had this wine at a top Philadelphia Restaurant. It was decanted for us. At first it tasted a bit thin and acidic, after about 45 minutes it opened up beautifully. The wine color was deep red. There was minimal bouquet. The fruit was deep with a good oak and tannin backbone. It was a very pleasant wine. The 2001s are very reasonably priced both a local stores (when you can find it) and at the restaurant we ate at. I would not, however, pay the $200 plus prices that are being asked for the 2005s and up.

Luckily the wine was purchased a couple of years ago before prices rocketed. Very enjoyable drink, but surely mispriced today? Wine was deep, bright red. Nose offered stoned red fruits, strawberries. We found it slightly spiced and peppery. Drank about 2hrs of decanting.

i was so disappointed with the last bottle i had a few days ago that i had to have another one just to be sure. The colour on this bottle was consistent with the last, the nose was more forward with cherry notes. Still a "thin" wine, not much weight on the palate but it did have a bit more grip on the finish than the last one. I think i will wait another yr or so until i try another one to see if there is improvement.

Opened in bottle for about 45 minutes before serving. Started off with strong scents of cherry. Nicely balanced wine with moderate tannins. After 2 hours or so it faded quite a lot compared to the other bottles of Leoville Barton / Calon Segur and Valandraud. Second day left over show little smell but nice cherry on the palate. Some way off the 1st label.

Decanted 1 hour. Medium/deep ruby/purple, narrow pale ruby rim. Aromatic nose with lovely pure cassis fruit, gravelly minerals and some savoury beefy notes. No more than medium bodied on the palate, excellent depth and purity of fruit with cassis to the fore, notable minerality. Sleek but well structured, with fine tannins and lovely fresh acidity carrying a very good length slightly savoury, beefy firm finish. Excellent, should improve over at least the next 5-7 years. Next bottle 2011.

Decanted two hours and then drank over the course of another two hours to allow it to develop. Caught a bit of barnyard aromas initially, but this blew off. Very enjoyable, soft wine once it developed, but not special. Lots of black fruit taste and tastes of cedar.

Deep ruby core, purple tints, narrow pale ruby rim. Lovely pure, refined cassis fruit on the nose, vanilla, the beginnings of some cedary development. Medium bodied on the palate, cassis fruit, cedar, good depth here and plenty of class, lingering firm finish with decent, fresh acidity. Starting to come on nicely and should continue to improve.

Very nice, smooth wine. I would call the nose sort of earthy, but the smooth Merlot was sweet and jammy. There was still some bite left in the Cabernet so overall it was a good structure.

Aromas of cigar box, cedar, floral and pencil lead are followed by flavors of currant, vanilla, and plum. The tannins have begun to integrate, but I don't see much being gained by holding this. Better wines for the price.

First of all I'm not in love with carruades de lafite...I don't know what everybody is raving about because I don't see these kinda special things in this wine.I drank several years but everytime it was the same thing just like driving with your foot on the brakes. It's not bad but there very much cigar box and cedar and thats about it...I don't find many fruit in it...perhaps you have to wait a long time but there are a lot of better wines in this price range...and when you see when they are asking 60 euro's for carruades 2006 en primeur!!!you can buy lynch bages for that price...

Medium/deep purplish core, pale purple rim. Nicely perfumed nose with ripe cassis fruit, some vanilla and spice. Quite youthful but there is some cedar poking through. Bright, ripe cassis fruit to the fore on the palate, again some cedar. Medium bodied, fine and elegant with lovely fresh acidity, fine if still slightly tight tannins and a good length blackcurrant finish. Really very good indeed and should develop well.

Decanted for 2 hours. Dark ruby color. Nose... saddle leather, wet soil, and a barnyard funk intermixed with some cherry fruit. Is this classic terroir of Pauillac? Later on into the evening, wine became more complex, rendering a slight taste of coffee beans & chocolate on the palate, but still, the barnyard and wet soil aroma is still there..... why is the wine salty on the finish? This reminds me of the 03 D'Almailhac, with a soy sauce finish, but the finish on this wine is even more prominent.

Wine Society "Stars of Pauillac" Tasting (The Wine Society, Stevenage): Still quite purple in appearance, med/deep core, narrow pale purple rim. Youthful cassis fruit on the nose, some plum, spice and pencil lead. Bright cassis and plum fruit on the palate, decent ripe and already quite approachable tannins and good fresh acidity. A medium length bright spicy and fruit finish. Very good, if still a bit youthful, and will certainly improve. Drink from 2007/8.

88 with upside potential, maybe 90? It has good structure but lacks the extra layer of complexity. It had a bit of iron/raw meat on the nose along with some graphite on the finish. Quite nice, definitely a second wine. [~$30 on release; Decanted for 15 minutes and maybe 30 min to an hour would be better; Next bottle in 2008; no point in long-term aging]

Initially upon opening this one was a little tight but only 30 minutes in the glass opened it up nicely. A simple bit of time in the decanter would have helped instead. Not a big nose but a little earthy and very Pauillac in structure and flavor. Medium bodied with a decent finish. A decent 'second' effort.

Opened and left in the bottle for about an hour before pouring. Detected a very slight barnyard note. I agree that it may have been better if decanted and left out longer. I am in general agreement with the previous notes. Although my wife and our guests liked this better than I did, I would not rate it a buy at anything over about $25. Wait until about 2007 to open another.

Decanted, left for one hour before tasting; consumed over the course of four hours. Enjoyable, easy style bordeaux; medium body, medium finish, moderate complexity. I liked this wine but there is nothing special about it, not a great value wine in 01 IMO. It might have fleshed out more in the mid palate if I let it live in the decanter longer, 87-89.

Double decanted for one hour. When poured it was still a little closed but developed with time in the glass. Deep purple colour fading to cherry with a slight orange rim. Cassis and oak dominated the nose and there was a hint of barnyard and an unidentifiable chemical aroma which blew off soon after pouring. Medium bodied and very nicely balanced with concentrated cassis and dark berry fruit. Good long finish lasting 30+ seconds. Bought for €41 from Lavinia in Paris last year – hardly a bargain but a surprisingly approachable and interesting wine nonetheless. Very good.

Medium ruby. The nose shows tobacco and minerals, but much less expressively than the Pichon and even the Gruaud. On the palate, also something of a disappointment, with the tannins not fully balanced by fruit. A disappointment to pretty much everybody at the tasting.

Not decanted consumed over a period of 2 days. Deep clear garnet color in the glass. Tight in the beginning with a nose comprised of dark fruit. After an hour the nose opened a little to reveal a hint of wood and more distinctly black current. On the palate there was reasonable mouth feel, most striking was a cherry “sweet-tart” finish. If you were to imagine a “sweet-tart candy” and throttle that intensity back to 30% that would best describe it. Tannins were moderate and fine. Day two the wine had opened considerably. The nose was that of a baby Pauillac with some Lead Pencil, sweet dark fruits. The palate followed the nose, the mouth feel was weightier, and the balance was good. The cherry sweet-tart thing was still there but the intensity has been reduced. The tannins were slightly more apparent in the finish day two. Not quite as interesting as the 2000 but well made, $33.00 retail.

Lead pencil, currents and dried cherry as well as a bit earthy. This was my personal favorite wine during an eclectic tasting ranging from the '97 Chiarlo La Court, to the '01 Viu Manent to this wine. While not as 'big' as the Viu it had more complexity aven at this stage which I feel is early. A nice finish, even and smooth throughout with a great mouthfeel. A solid wine, especially if any weight is added for value.
Decant time would seem to be about an hour, perhaps just a bit more. The wine really openned up and became more complette about then.

Aerated 2 hours. Concentrated color with a little bricking at the rim. Notes of red fruit, leather, a bit of smoke and raisins at the onset. Not a big wine but more elegant in taste with a bit of tannin. More integrated than my last bottle 3 years ago.

The colour on this bottle was consistent with the last, the nose was more forward with cherry notes. Still a "thin" wine, not much weight on the palate but it did have a bit more grip on the finish than the last one. I think i will wait another yr or so until i try another one to see if there is improvement.

Sleek but well structured, with fine tannins and lovely fresh acidity carrying a very good length slightly savoury, beefy firm finish. Excellent, should improve over at least the next 5-7 years.

Medium bodied and very nicely balanced with concentrated cassis and dark berry fruit. Good long finish lasting 30+ seconds.
