Final of 3 bottles, it's been 4 years since I last had this wine. 75% Cabernet Sauvignon and the rest Merlot, Malbec, Petit Verdot, and Cabernet Franc. I must say, at 17 yrs of age, this Cab blend is delicious , showing a velvety texture and mouthfeel, with notes of black plums, blueberry syrup, mocha, and a hint of refreshing peppermint. The tannins are resolving but provide good structure, and the acidity is ample for a bold Napa Cabernet. Still very good and will likely continue to drink well for another 4-5 yrs.

This was better than anticipated; dark rich plum and blueberry pie on the nose with some sweet spices and just a hint of vanilla; the oak however is mostly absorbed; the palate feels better balanced than I thought it might; no heat and not flabby at all. Has years ahead of it, but also drinking very well now.

Full bodied with average acid and mellowed tannin. Noticeable oak but well integrated. Medium length and pleasant finish. Not a classic Cabernet, fat and fruity but overall well made and enjoyable.

blackberry on the nose, nice fruits still coming through. Slightly dull on the palet, nicer smelling than it was to drink but still a very nice wine. Would have liked to try a couple years ago. Dark cherry colour and a nice balance.

Pre New Years Red Wine for Steak Night (Bobby Van's on Park, NYC): My last bottle of this vintage, and I'm glad I was able to wait on it. Opened but not decanted at a NYC Steakhouse. Its no longer anywhere near a fruit bomb (not sure it ever was, as I didn't drink any of them young), it was medium bodied with a long, complex finish. Notes of Asian spices, cedar, some minerality, and some non-strawberry red fruit.

Gotta love Stag's Leap fruit. Sweet, rounded, and polished. Good oak aging is evident here. Some might think it's too much oak but it is just enough for me (I am a Silveroak fan). Nose of blueberry liqueur, pepper, and oak attack your nose as you keep sniffing this beauty. On the palate, it is well polished and gives a finish lasting 20-25 seconds. Good work.

Deep garnet color leads to a nose of cassis, blackberry and vanilla. Decanted for two hours then drank. Medium plus body has flavors of black and blue fruit, hints of soft tobacco, vanilla and a bit of Asian spice. Velvety finish lasts 45 seconds.
This is fourth bottle of this wine I've drank and clearly the best. I think this benefited from a decant. Enjoy.

PnP with notes of red and purple berry fruit, red and black currant, cocoa powder, and chalk. Not filling in much on the mid-palate and a bit of a bite on the finish. Into the decanter it went.
With some air, it rounded out a little. Maintained its more red fruit profile, with currant, dark dried cranberry, and cedar flavors. Fattened up a tad on the palate, but fell off on the back end. Complexity wasn't there, nor was any energetic "oomph."
Not a bad wine, but certainly nothing like the other Cliff Lede reds. This was good, but it tasted like the proverbial "standard" cabernet; like something I could get at BevMo.
This was what I would consider a "throw away bottle" as part of the recent wine club shipment from Cliff Lede (maybe they had an extra 100 cases of this wine and decided to throw a bottle of it in every allocation to off-load their inventory); I'm not a fan of moves like that.
In any event, if you have one, drink it over the next few years. It is medium-bodied and would pair ok with a pork loin or hamburger. If you don't have one, I say don't bother unless you find it on the secondary market for under $40.
Nice body and balance, very drinkable, with rich currant, peppery spice, and hint of cocoa. Just lacking a bit in depth and complexity, or would have scored higher.

This was a big heavy wine mouth feel, loaded with blackberry and blueberry flavors. It still had tons of fruit left, but not much tannins. Opened 2 days ago. Deep ruby/brick at the core. Aromas of faint tire rubber, deep black fruits, vanilla, and wet rocks. Palate shows a full bodied wine, tannins are still present and seem a bit astringent, and the acidity is med. There is some heat noted on the palate from the 14.9% alcohol. The flavors are echoed from the palate, turning into tart black fruit notes, with a glycerin-laden finish that is med in length. This is a nice Calif Cab, a bit too manipulated for my taste, but a nicely made wine overall. Drinking really well right now, and will likely last through 2022.

On the open, the nose was bing cherry and dark chocolate. After decanting for a couple of hours, the cab was excellent with chocolate/cocoa and blackberries as the predominant sensory profile. It paired terrifically with nuts and asiago cheese.

Opened this the morning of the first drinking (was serving at an event) and left in decanters throughout the day before rebottling and pouring. This note is for the second day (recorked the bottle overnight, light refrigeration as it was stored outside in the NE). This is just a very smooth even wine. There's an undercurrent of fig, clove, maybe some mulberry. Still a pretty strong tannic backbone at the end which suggests this wine was drunk much too young. Still, very enjoyable.

Great fragrance on the nose, packed with vanilla bean, cassis, and rum. Rich with delicious fruit on the palate, tobacco, and little bit of SL spice. Really liked the transition of middle palate into the finish. Very napa cabernet in character, but interesting enough to stand out from the rest. I really enjoy these wines from Cliff Lede, and this 07' is one of the better ones I have tasted.

Good, not great. Jack of all trades, master of none, not showy or concentrated but not showing pure or elegant, either. Compacted out of the gate, but got chocolate milky on day 2. Hold 1-2 years and keep your expectations reasonable. Not a QPR but an OK bottle. 89-90.

Nice, but just OK for the price. Pleasant red fruit, slight layers of complexity showing. It gained and opened after about an hour, so decant or wait a bit. At times a bit hot at 14.9% (ugh you mean 15%, or really 15.5%?) If it is at the right temperature, the heat doesn't show so much. The tones in the wine are small, slight leather, not much earth, tannins in check, but a bit of layering, tiny meat and sweet notes, light coconut. Pleasant on its own. Will be good for a while. (I did enjoy this by the glass with some meditation, thumbs up for that)

Late Sunday nite and wasn't looking to open anything that good. Well I got exactly what I expected with one of the worst QPR's out there. The wine was Ok - not terrible or anything - just OK, low end stags leap. It should be sold for $20, not $50.

Popped & poured. Nose of plum, coffee and charcoal. Palate still closed, with muted flavors of blackberry, wet stone and earth. Not as approachable as most Napa '07s I've had. Soft, fine tannins, but could still probably benefit from some cellar time.

Decanted for an hour. Dark crimson and violet touches that surround the rim. Dark chocolate, gravel pit and blackberry on the nose, showing some heat as well. Very plush and some more heat, again. A medium finish and the nose make this a good wine, it just has a little too much heat and lacks dimension to be outstanding. Maybe this bottle was a little off, however.... Drink now - 2014.

Popped and poured. Delicious nose, with scorched earth, gravely rocks, slate and vanilla. Palate is concentrated with dark currants, but with the vanilla and oak quite forward, fruit in the background, and lots of dark earth gravel flavors that carry on a long finish with burnt coffee and cocoa. Tannins are quite prominent, but polished and fine. Restrained for Napa cab, though the oak needs time to integrate. Even so, delivers for the price but does not exceed. (oak seemed to recede with air). Pulled together on night 2 losing the vanilla oak notes and showing classic stags leap typacity of coffee, cocoa, and scorched earth. Quite nice.

WS really gave this an 82? WTF. Opened about 90 mins before drinking with a steak dinner. Could have used another couple of hours, honestly -- there was a little heat that disappeared nicely over the course of the meal. Cherry heavy on the nose and palate, with earthiness and smooth Stag's Leap tannins. Looking forward to seeing how the rest of the bottle tastes in a day or two.

Minneapolis Wine Club: Napa Cabernet: A wine that needs some time to open up. It took 2 hours for this wine to show more than basic earth quality. It showed dust, cherry, raspberry and minerals. The wine does not posses intense tannins and should be consumed sooner than the 05 sampled side by side. Really an underrated wine by Spectator and do decant 2 plus hours.

Minneapolis Wine Club Does Cali Cabs (Gail's House): Dark red purple. Nose opens herbal with mint, eucalyptus notes which largely blow off to reveal some nice red fruits and earth. The palate does not show as well as the nose, some muted red and black fruit, very tannic. Definitely got better with some time. Strikes me as tight, and needing time or a long decant. A prevoius bottle had showed better than this.

Slightly sour blackberry jam complemented by distant campfire and light oak/vanilla notes. I have heard great things about this vineyard and am really looking forward to tasting other vintages. Hennepin Lake Tasting; 10/20/2010-11/12/2010: Nice wine but not as outstanding as some of the vintages and surely better than the 82 from Spectator. Nose: Black Cherry, Ripe Blackberries, Vanilla, and Smokey Oak. Palate: Very concentrated with Red Cherries, Blueberries and Sweet Oak. The tanin structure was very strong, but not harsh. Finish: Moderate length with mostly red fruits, some chocolate and toasty oak. This needs time to evolve, but should gain complexity. Would like to try one with a proper decant.

next to 07 Ridge SCM, and 06 Cliff Lede Poetry. blue into black fruit with a bit of woodsy earthiness to the nose. structure shows much more here than the Poetry. A result of the hillside concentrated berries that go into the Poetry? The richer fruit absorbs the brunt of the structure of the Poetry?

Black and blue fruited, structured, intense. Youthful. All estate fruit, sustainable grown. 75% cab, 12% merlot, 7% malbec, 4% franc, 2% verdot. 18 months wood, 60% new (I would guess French).
Where they are going -- "07 and 08 was the height of replanting, so now down at 5,000 cases, '08 will be smaller and then '09 will be back up to '09. They are putting a price freeze on the wines though" so they are eating a whole ton of money.

Its probably got at least a few more years of life left, until the fruit begins to dry out. It went great with a both a cheeseburger and a strip steak.

Quite nice.
