  • Dark ruby in color with a short reddish/ brick rim.

Nose of black currants, blueberries, black cherries, light earth, tobacco leaf, cedar, light vanilla, licorice, eucalyptus, forest floor, mildew, black pepper and herbs.

Medium plus in body with medium acidity.

Dry on the palate with blackberries, black currants, plums, cooked cherries, spices, oak, chocolates, vanilla, licorice, herbs, earth, light vegetables, tobacco leaf, eucalyptus, Indian spices and peppercorn.

Long finish with fine grained tannins and tangy raspberries.

This 24 year old iconic wine from Australia is still drinking beautifully. Tasty and smooth with good structure and great complexity. A little bitter on the ending for me, though.

Feels like a 30 year old Left Bank Bordeaux. Might be a bit past its prime, but Interesting stuff nonetheless.

    Robert Parker 93 points.

Needed 3 hours of airtime to open up properly.

It is delicious, but I expected more from it. Might just be this specific bottle. I've had a few different vintages of this great wine and it is always an experience.

Good by itself or with food, like a nice piece of steak.

100% Shiraz grapes from Barossa Valley were aged in American oak barrels for 18 months.

    14.5% alcohol by volume.

    94 points.

    $400.

  • Medium-deep crimson. Fresh redcurrant, blackberry, dark chocolate, spice and tobacco leaf notes and very fine tannins that have melded over the last 20+ years. No surprise it reminds me a bit of a very well aged Kalimna but with such great balance and complexity.

Drank with a beautiful tomahawk stake with a gruyere and mushroom sauce and duck fat potatoes as a very belated 21st dinner.

  • A few observations: A) The wines undoubtedly deserve their legendary status. Few wines manage to square the circle of being intense, rich in substance and structure, while at the same time being ethereal, delicate and airy. B) The wines are all complex and very precise. With age (and/or air) the wines show a Rayas-like pure red berry fruit to die for. Other defining aromas are the minty/eucalyptus notes and especially the sweet spice I find in many Aussie Shirazes. C) The wines age at a glacial pace. Even the 40+ year old wines are still quite young and all will need a lot of decanting. D) All the wines were on a high level (except for one subpar bottle of the 2000). The winner was the magical 1982 (98pts), the epitome of elegance and balance.

TN: This bottle had a problem, probably a bad cork. The wine was much more developed with lots of soy sauce and oxidation notes.

  • Wine tasting for friends: Overwhelming notes of canned tomatoes. Bummer

  • Grange vertical (Wunderbrunnen, Opfikon): Part of a 7-vintage vertical (key takeaways in the tasting story). Very mature with notable ox notes of beef juice. Underneath leather and earth as well as fig and plum confit. The palate still works and adds a nice tobacco aftertaste. But clearly approaching end of life with acidity taking over the reigns on the palate. Could be bottle variation, but 2000 was apparently a challenge vintage for them.

  • 200 Burgundy Grand Crus from vintage 2000, 4-day blind tasting (Singapore): Pirate bottle. Unfortunately too oxidative to rate.

  • Grange has been our favorite and most treasured wine over several decades (treasured prices, too!). Originally bought for about $150 and perfectly cellared. Amazing how concentrated and youthful this was. Completely dark garnet and opaque, without any brown edges. Powerful dark raspberry and American oak dominant aromas, with some black cherry and plums. The flavors amazingly powerful and complex, the tannins completely resolved, and a long Dark fruit and vanilla oak aftertaste. This wasn't even considered one of the greatest Granges of the 199-8 to 2001 era but it was stunning!

  • A little disappointing.. Normally our favorite wine. While very nice it didn't live up to my usual high bar. Others that tasted it didn't feel as negative as I was. I have a few more and hope the next 2000 shows better. I will let you know....

  • Drank after a short decant over the course of dinner. Intense nose of plums, blackberries, raisins. Dense, velvety, lengthy flavor. Seemed like a good time to open this

  • Masterful and evocative melange of red and black fruits, earth, blueberry and plum stand out. Slow ox three hours then lovely on first pour and continued to unwind elegantly over the next 4 hours. Definitely benefited from the air, and best served around 19 degrees C

  • Flawless delicious and smooth. Cherry and tobacco on the nose. Grange never disappoints and was probably at the end of its life

  • Absolutely fantastic! If the nose was a little more expressive, more intense, I'd give this wine 100 points! On the nose/palate I had some intense aromas of black olives, menthol and incense (it tasted like the Vatican! Maybe it was heaven...). The tannins are still present, but smooth and they still provide the structure to last another 10 years for sure. This wine can be decanted a few hours in advance to fully enjoy it. If I only had a few words to describe this wine it would be: Intense, complex and deep.

I had this side by side with a Henschke Hill of Grace 1998 and both were equally amazing, but for different reasons. The nose of the Hill of Grace was out of this world (one of the most impressive and complex nose I had the chance to smell with the perfect combination of primary, secondary and tertiery aromas!), but the palate of the Grange was like tasting a piece of paradise (Incense at the Vatican!).

    Two memorable wines...

  • My 5th Grange shared by a dear friend at the Australian Club (no photos or phones allowed).

A difficult vintage could not dampen the sheer pleasure and complexity of this 18 year old Shiraz. Small testament to the Schubert way (Grange's creator, and Penfolds chief winemaker of many years) of blending the finest, most intensely flavoured, ripe fruit from multiple regions and vineyards. Its one of the few Shiraz only Grange vintages.

    Very approachable. Unmistakably Grange.

Ethereal nose after a good 2/3 hour decant. Soft and luxurious in the mouth. The 18 years have mellowed the fruit and oak, with understated power and fine balance from start to finish. A surge of black fruits, mostly blackberry and blackcurrant, in perfect step with layers of bacon fat, cinnamon, five spice, dark chocolate and vanillan oak. The finish, truly satisfying. You are left in no doubt this is a world class wine.

2000 is a good vintage by Grange standards. Not the best. It's definitely in its drinking window, and will reward for at least another decade. Maybe more.

    Just Peerless.

    A Wozza 96.5/100 (4.5/5.0) from me.

  • First Grange. Considering the rep I was surprised to be indifferent about it. Massive coating mouthfeel and layered but it felt a bit contrived, not alive, perhaps not the best vintage to discover Grange but it was definitely a correct bottle.

  • Insanely perfumed. The minute I pulled the cork the scent filled the room. First glass was amazing. Hard to drink much more than that.

  • Penfolds Grange Vertical (Sixteen, Chicago IL): Nose: The nose is balanced and ripe with mint, eucalyptus, licorice, dark red cherries, menthol, raspberries, vanilla, and leather tones. There is a smokier element to this with good depth and a dark red fruit base.

Taste: Full bodied with medium acidity and medium+ tannins. The tannins are silky, yet youthful with the feel showing polish and depth along with mint, eucalyptus, licorice, menthol, raspberries, vanilla, and leather.

Overall: This was showing beautifully. There was more of an American Oak imprint with the extra levels of mint, menthol, and vanilla, but it isn't overly oaky. There is excellent depth and polish with the feeling that this can easily sail on for another 15+ years.

  • What a pleasant surprise. My first Grange and i expected something big and new worldish, but this wine showed beautiful oak and very expressive fruit, without being over the top.
Needs at least 1-2 hours in the decanter and will probably be even better in 10 years.

  • Friday after Thanksgiving (FAT) - Part 2 - Penfolds Grange Vertical (Palm Beach Gardens FL): Tasting in 30 vintage Grange vertical, late night, brief note. Started so jammy I thought I wouldn't enjoy, but there is enough structure and dry extract to retain. balance. Very delish.

  • Penfolds Grange Wine Dinner at Botrini's (Botrini's Restaurant Athens): Third flight.
We had it side by side with the '02 vintage and it was pared
with thick hand made papardelle with truffled duck ragout which
    was an excellent match.
The '00 was one of the highlights of the night for me and one of
    the most atypical Grange vintages.
Nose which could almost pass for a heady hot vintage Rhone with
plummy and floral scents. Full bodied and dense with firm chewey
tannins it was a pleasure for the senses!

  • Penfolds Grange Wine Dinner at Botrini's (Botrini Restaurant, Athens, Greece): Probably the most pleasent surprise of the night. Complex and expressive nose, balance and -relatively speaking- on the elegant side for a Grange. Great pairing with duck raghou papardellas with truffle and Peru cocoa. Very enjoyable already with good aging potential.

  • 2hour decant, massive nose, petroleum, oak and black anis with layers of ripe black fruit....that said, it's about where it all ended, the actual juice never caught up with the screamingly good nose,,,but if it does it will easily go to 94-6 pts.
Just as you would expect being 15 yrs old no problem with age at this point.

  • Young smelling with raspberries and some oak. The palate doesn't come across as young with juicy berries and almost resolved tannins. Really good but overshadowed by the company.

  • Penfolds Tasting with 5 vintages of Grange and a bunch more (Downtown Cleveland): Perhaps the weakest vintage in the tasting, this still rocked. Black raspberries, grilled meats, black pepper, cedar and slight menthol on the nose. The most classis "Shiraz" of the Granges. Firm tannins but showing a depth of layers as it unwinds in the glass. Great concentration. Lots of fruit. Delicious.

  • Amazing wine. Different nose and taste than most Grange. Took over an hour to open up was best after two hours. Rush I had another bottle.

  • You can taste the pedigree here but it is still Shiraz. Lots of floral vanilla, blueberry and a touch of pepper on the nose. Initially after decanting it was very fruit forward but with air it was better balanced. The palate had lots of oaky vanilla spice with blueberry and other red fruit. Medium long aftertaste.

  • Westchester Wine School - Premium Wine Tasting (Bar Lees, Mamaroneck, NY): Drank at WWS tasting, and my first experience with this wine. Very dense purplish color. Rich jammy black and red fruits, some spice, some green pepper all in bold powerful package. Lots of complexity with excellent length, a bit on the hot side though not disturbingly so. This wine is definitely on the decadent side of the spectrum and clearly a well-made wine. Not sure it's worth the steep price however. Interesting that this wine didn't come close to finishing within the top 3 wines of the nite.

  • Grange tasting at Divino, Calgary; 10/8/2013-10/9/2013 (Divino Bistro, Calgary): Inky. Gamey, horsey, mint and mourvedre-like. Alos black fruit, cassis, graphite. Brilliant, explosive nose. Intense raspberry sweetness with cedar. Wow! a syrupy texture but without the weight and this is certainly dry. Long finish and firm but not harsh.

  • Amazing bottle of wine. Had this as part of a tasting at our house over the weekend. We tasted 2002 St. Henri, 2003 Bin 389, 2006 RWT, 2005 Bin 707 and 2000 Grange. Each wine got bigger and more complex and all wines were enjoyed by all participants. Each bottle really has its place and it was evident that these are all extremely well made wines. We recently traveled to Australia and people there generally thought that these wines are overhyped and overpriced. While there may be better valued wines in AUS, these continue to be my overall favorites as they just have that something special that others cannot attain. Grange is a journey that is worth the effort.

  • Dense colour between purple and black. Rich, very powerful, warm - jammy dark fruits in the nose with Asian spices, chocolate, cedar and eucalyptus. Decadent, velvety sweet palate with blackberries, licorice, cassis liquor and enough tannins for a long future. Long lingering for minutes.

  • I brought this to WD50 since the menu is eclectic and I wanted a wine that would shine for itself. It did not disappoint. Even if I've had the wine before I often find myself wondering if I'm going to think an expensive wine will be worth the money to me when I finally get to drink it. Well, the nose alone was worth the price of admission. Powerful and beguiling. Strong notes of black licorice, ripe berries, soy sauce and raw beef were supported by hints of earth and mushrooms. The palate had interesting dark berries, mild crushed pepper, baking spices more soy and very harmonious citrusy acidity, but what made it brilliant was the perfectly seamless velvety texture. A long plush finish completed the picture but I did get a mild waft of heat on some sips which was the only complaint I had about the wine. An amazing experience. Thankful to have younger ones in the cellar and encouraged by the fact that this one has decades ahead of it.

  • Deep ruby with purple core. On the nose a rich full aroma of red and black forest fruits, a whiff of sweek oak coffee and menthol. The palate was quite extraordinary, so unctuous and full. Sweet damsons, blueberries and cassis creme, vanila and mint. The concentration and sheer depth of flavour is amazing and the finish almost infinite. This is clearly still very young in terms of evolution but such a pleasure to drink now too. A tgruely spectacular wine.

  • Penfolds Tasting - St Regis: Grange Vertical tasting (82, 86, 90, 94, 95, 99, 00, 01 & 02). Worked my way from the 82 to the 02 with sniffing and drinking. Then when back through all the wines.

The most dense and powerful nose of the night so far. Notice a touch of heat on first whiff with hardcore blackberry and blueberry. In the mouth, another balanced effort. Sweet lush dark fruits. The sweetest dry wine of the night. Really a beautiful Grange. 93.

  • Unbelievable as always. Smooth nose of blueberries and vanilla. Moderate attack of blueberries, glycerin, with a pepper note at the end. Hint of eucalyptus on the finish. Not a hugely long finish, but there is a nice support of tannin and acidity.
