Straddles styles of classic & modern CdP. Strong cassis fruit, with good secondary earthiness and a touch of herbs de Provence. Tannins are still evident, and I think that this wine will continue to improve for up to a decade more.

Dark ruby with some browning on the edges. Some hints of tertiary leather and notes of dried spices, but mainly just monolithic stewed dark fruits and a lot of alcohol. Full bodied, over-ripe, jammy. Lacking freshness and any sort of elegance. The hot weather shows and I'm not sure it was particularly well handled here. Disappointing. God knows how I am going to get through another 11 bottles...

First glass, A good wine at the tail end of still having some primary berries and fruits. Very smooth, fennel, cherries, leather. Last glass showed its age and I’d say at the tail end of its best days. Did not decant because the restaurant did not have a decanter but based on this bottle I would not decant, I would also not sit on any bottles a lot longer either.

Final bottle of 12. Have rated it the same every time. Consistent and very good. Mid-way through secondary development. I like this spot and think it's a great time to drink, but with at least another five years in peak window.

Medium ruby appearance. Very little lightening as this bottle approaches age 12.
Pronounced nose of cherry liqueur, melted red and black liquorice, baking spice and even some rosemary and thyme. Very impressive nose and much more pronounced (based on my notes) than a bottle drunk 5 years ago that comes from the same case.
Full bodied with still plenty of structure and acidity. This bottle would be easy to pick out as CDP in a blind tasting, but I would never guess the age- tastes 5 years younger than it is. Gorgeous mouthfeel with lots of similar flavor characteristics and a long finish.
In my experience once CDP hits 10 years old "there are no great wines only great bottles" and this is a great bottle. Drink now or hold for up to another decade in a cold cellar.

Drinking very well. Long decant. Classic CdP profile that went well with Christmas rib roast. Had with a 2006 Clos St Jean, which had more nose but this was more balanced. People split pretty evenly on which they liked better.

Splash decant. Dark garnet, suspended sediment. Fragrant bouquet of kirsch. Palate follows nose, lifted but sweet red cherry, some nice spice notes and a nice line of acidity giving a lingering final. Medium bodied, quite polished with great balance. Tannins fully integrated.
This is open for business and very pleasant. Drinks well at cellar temperature as while it warms alcohol begins to be perceptible. Otherwise, just serve this with some relatively rich foods and it's poise and balance will shine.

Nice spot in the drinking window. Secondary flavors are reasonably developed. If that's what you prefer, then they'll probably improve further for another few years before a decline, but it's at a nice point now. If you prefer primary fruit flavors, then drink up, because that ship is sailing away.

Dark. This doesn't look over 10 years old! Very youthful. Masses of rich, sweet fruit. Tonnes of alcohol. Tannins very much there - though you'd find this flabby if they were too soft. Plums. Compote. Darker notes. Almost heady. Sweet. Grippy finish of tannins and acids. Not complex but hedonistic. Gutsy. Hard to know how you match this to food! Though I like this very much indeed.
Why is this so cheap? (£33-£40 GBP pre-tax) The latest round of 2016s in this kind of style and quality all came out at twice this price.

Dark, rich, thick, sweet, spiced wine. No mistaking where this is from. Drank over 1.5 hours and drank better and better. Some sediment in the bottle. Have been drinking mostly Burgundy as of lately and is missing something that never existed in this bottle of wine....red berries and fruits. I would not wait on this wine, a little too sweet, for me, as it is and imagine the fruits that are there will fall off in a few years. After all that, a good wine but that 1-1.5% extra alcohol compared to a burgundy is noticeable to me.

Time to check in on this after about 2-3 years since my last bottle. Still pretty dark garnet color. Notes of mainly dark cherries, black currant, plums, kirsch, some roasted meat, graphite, also some licorice and provençal herbs. It's full-bodied and dense, the alcohol is slightly recognizable but not disturbing… this is CdP. Medium acidity and medium tannin add some structure. Long finish. This is entering its drinking window and will stay here for a few years. Very good and excellent value for top-notch CdP.

Opened last night. Not quite the equal of my first bottle. Medium ruby with violet rim. Nose is relatively straightforward, with crushed raspberries predominating. Medium-bodied and flashy in the mouth, this is drinking very well at the moment although it is not as good as my first bottle and lacks a bit in complexity. Still, a good bottle, and a relatively decent value. Tasted blind. Mature dried dark fruit flavors. Maybe some roast beef juice. Soft and sweet with medium weight and velvety consistency. Low acidity, low tannins, outsized fleshiness. Quite tasty. I often equate these sorts of flavors to those in beer. This is not unlike a bottle of Rochefort 10 that I had recently. Rating: 91.
Guess the wine. Chateauneuf du Pape. ~13 years old.
Non-Blind p.s.: Continuing to taste this, there's quite a lot of peppery heat to this wine and more complexity than I expressed in my blind review. If I were to re-rate it now, I'd put it in the 92-93 range.

Wonderful wine. Still very dark. Color shows no sign of decline. Classic garrigue nose. Deep, rich, penetrating. Round and ripe fruit in the mouth, this really delivers all you look for in a great Chateauneuf. Aged to perfection, but no end in sight. This has it all, and at less than $70 at present, it is a true bargain. 5-13-17-9: 94/100.

Pronounced nose of red fruits (strawberry jumps out of the glass) , vanilla, cherry liqueur and spice. Definitely a mature nose.
Full bodied on the palate with low to medium tannins and medium (at best) acidity. A touch of heat from the alcohol which is definitely on the high side.
Lots of red fruit on the long finish.
This is an excellent example of a full throttle CDP, but I would drink up over the next two to three years max.

Monthly Tasting Group EEE #040; Châteauneuf-du-Pape (@ JD): The beautiful bouquet is still a bit locked, but shows very ripe dark berries, blood, dark chocolate and salty licorice. On the palate juicy, mainly dark berry fruits, beautiful herbs and spices, some chocolate, beautiful acidity and in a wonderful balance with the sweetness. Round, but still firm tannin. A beautiful and harmonious wine which is still firm and although really nice already, will improve with a few more years of ageing. Drink between 2017 and 2022+ is probably a good suggestion. 92 – 93+

PnP. Pretty dark garnet color with a touch of purple. First holding back a little, but after a few minutes in the glass the nose opens up with beautiful notes of mainly dark cherries, black currant, plums, kirsch, graphite/charcoal, some licorice and provencal herbs/garrigue. On the palate there are again notes of dark cherries, kirsch, but also some red fruit, some sweet spices, graphite, herbs and a touch of dried fruit and tobacco. It's full-bodied and dense, the alcohol is slightly recognizable but hidden under a wealth of fruit and extract. Medium(-) acidity and medium-high tannin add structure. The tannin is still a little rough but of good quality. Very long finish. This is a fantastic, opulent but very complex CdP. It's still a baby in terms of evolution but I'm sure it will grow into something very very beautiful.

14.5% abv. I had three bottles of this so decided to sacrifice one to check in on it. Deep purple color; opaque. The nose suggests purple and black fruit and espresso. It tastes very young and more tannic than I favor and conveys more dark fruit and espresso notes. I think it has good material for mid-term aging at least if not longer. I will wait five more years before opening a second bottle.

The high alcohol (15%) is hidden my massive fruit and extract. Dark fruit, licorice, tar and garigue hits the palate and leaves a long long aftertaste. The balance is perfect and there is a transparency which leaves you wishing there was more left. The high fruit hides loads of tannins and requires good pairing with food at this point. Had it over 2 evenings. Better the second. Try again 2017? Outstanding 94-95.

91-92pts. Nice CNDP, classic notes on the nose - pepper, meaty, fruit in the background. A lot of fruit on the palate, strawberry, raspberry, a little tobacco flavors as well. Smooth and not too overpowering, good clean finish. Drinks well now, but no rush to drink this.

Dark purple color turning violet at the rim with a perfumed nose of black fruits, licorice and lavender. The palate is dense, creamy and velvety in texture with notes of dark cherry, currant, plum, fig and kirsch. The mid palate is sweetly intense and layered. Finishes long on silky tannin with hints of espresso and dark chocolate. This cruises on low acidity but so delicious and delectable that's approachable now yet structured to keep in the cellar for quite some time. Drink now with 1-hr decanting or better in 2014 until 2029.

Young Southern Rhones (K&L Wines, San Francisco): Medium center. Most brooding dark fruit nose of all the reds today. Sappy but simple entry but some late arriving tobacco and acidity. Reminds me of Mont Olivet style. Despite the late structural elements, it is still not quite as shapely as either of the other 2 Chateauneufs.

Wine Advocate #197 Oct 2011 Robert Parker 96 Drink: N/A $41-$80 (65) The monumental 2009 Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvee Prestige is a creative blend of 60% Grenache, 15% Syrah, 10% Mourvedre, and the rest grapes such as Vaccarese, Muscardin, Cinsault, Terret Noir and Counoise. Most of the fruit is aged in foudre, with the Syrah and Mourvedre components aged in new oak. The fabulous 2009 offers an opaque purple color along with a gorgeous nose of charcoal, burning embers, black currants, soy, Asian plum sauce, blackberries and kirsch. The wine-s complexity is nearly off the charts. Moreover, once it hits the palate, the high glycerin, silky tannins, low acidity and luxurious concentration provide a compelling drinking experience. This spectacular Chateauneuf du Pape is one of the wine-s of the vintage. It can be drunk now or cellared for 15+ years.

Finishes long on silky tannin with hints of espresso and dark chocolate. This cruises on low acidity but so delicious and delectable that's approachable now yet structured to keep in the cellar for quite some time. Drink now with 1-hr decanting or better in 2014 until 2029.

Big and almost unapproachable at this point. Medium bodied, hot and acidic on the finish.

The monumental 2009 Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvee Prestige is a creative blend of 60% Grenache, 15% Syrah, 10% Mourvedre, and the rest grapes such as Vaccarese, Muscardin, Cinsault, Terret Noir and Counoise.

Dark, gamey, mushroom smell. Lot's of tannin. Nicely balanced already though. Tasted at Uncorked 2009 Rhone en Primeur.
