Rich, decadent and made in the old fashion style, with scents of grilled hazelnuts, marzipan pastry and citrus oil, followed by a dense mouthfeel, rich, concentrated, balanced by its dry extract, ending quite long in a chalky inflected opulent finish, lacking a bit of nerve, but this is a Rubens like beauty, and now at peak.

2nd of 2, opened 30 minutes, perfect cork and level, as April bottle, maybe slightly darker, burnt butter element, complex, oily and huge even for Perrieres, more citrus would improve it, hint of pox around the corner and colour worrying, flavours and energy however suggest could yet improve but I'd drink up on balance of risk. F+ (18).

1st of 2 bottles, opened 20 minutes, perfect cork and level, golden and unctuous; mainly orchard fruit, slightly honeyed, just enough citrus, some mineral, complex and classy; full, long, persistent, concentrated, oily 05 and perhaps oversized, blessed with nearly enough citrus to bring into some sort of balance, special if you like this sort of thing, seems fully mature with little upside, hint of pox risk and colour would suggest early drinking necessary, even if Lafon tends to be on the buttery golden side in my experience. F+ (18).

Massive on the palate on nuts, the attack is straightforward. The juice is dense, the hazelnut will gain the upper hand with aeration. Moreover, aeration will have a decisive effect on the wine, but in a rather negative way. The lack of tension was noticeable from the start, and will intensify. The wine tends to become clumsy and this problem of balance will influence the length of the wine. If the finish is like the attack, massive and buttery, the length is pretty ordinary.
It's good but far from transcendent considering the pedigree. I would even say that this bottle seems to have already passed its peak given its evolution over the tasting.

PNP, needed to be decantered. Lovely aromas of fresh apples mixed with fresh citrus fruits. Dense and lightly reductive flavors which just got better with more air. Alas it was at its apogee just towards the end of the evening with the final glass.
