Initially stern and unyielding but improved significantly with a decant and air time. Dark berry and spice. On the leaner side with characteristic '96 acidity.

1996 Dinner @ Lot. Decanted at 1:00 served at 6:00. Loads of black cherry fruit and Vosne spice in the nose and palate. Weighty with persistence and a lively finish. An excellent 96 but the 1990 from last month was more seamless and satisfying.

Dark crimson red, to red-black in color. It’s a bigger style, with dark red fruit, and some campfire on the nose. While it shows some good components on the palate, it all doesn’t seem very cohesive. There’s good contraction to the fruit, though it’s not very fresh or convincing. It wasn’t decanted for sediment, so that probably would’ve helped, and while I never seem to have luck with 96’ reds this was definitely one of the better ones I’ve tried.

Bottle 2807/6438. Typical Leroy aromatics. The sweetness opens up with air but a bit stern on the finish. Much prefer the 98 on the side.
