I brought this to dinner, not having tasted it before. Expected it to be alive an interesting but holy shit this was good. Brooding, dark with serious tannins and a sleek structure. Still full of fresh fruit. So much more complexity with 30 minutes of air.
This could easily stand up to a lot of Grand Cru Burgundy of the same age, and has a lot more to give.

Hanzell Vertical (Union Restaurant, Seattle.): Rich nose of over-brewed oolong which continued to the palate. Dark fruits, cherry and myrrh. Fruit dominates though a little chypre tinges the finish. Tannins too prominent instead of providing power.

Hanzell Vertical (Seattle, WA): Reticent nose. Dill. A little nutty. Somewhat linear, black and brooding, closed, a very chunky wine but at age 20 it's still locked up pretty tight.

PINK ON THE EDGE. CHERRIES AND A TOUCH OF EARTHINESS IN THE NOSE. BLACK CHERRY FLAVORS AND A LONG FINISH. THIS TSTG:ORANGE ON THE EDGE, SHORTER FINISH, ON THE DECLINE.
