Clearly there is a lot of diversity of opinion here, and I should disclose that I CV is one of my favorites among Grand Cru burgs. The bottles we were served from were in pristine condition, and I was impressed with the rich meaty flavor of the wine, layered on deep black fruit. Drink up if you are lucky enough to own some - it is unlikely to improve further, but is wonderful now.

From the magnum. Transparent, dark ruby-garnet. Delicate roasted coffee bean notes are laced into plenty red berry fruit – raspberry, bing cherry, and red currant. The abundant tannins are incredibly silky and further enhanced by the finely chiselled acid frame. Light-footed, delicate and juicy, but certainly not without depth or length. Very elegant. This wine has developed splendidly. The silky texture and combination of fresh primary fruit with the first tertiary aromas is currently magical.

Lost in the cellar. Clear cherry red - that pale but bright colour of the best 97s. No browning. Nose of black cherry, blueberry and spice. A touch of earthy. Palate juicy in the best since - tender and round without a real punch. Again a feature of the best 97s. Remarkably intact after hiding in the cellar since purchase in 1999.

PnP. Much better than the earlier bottle. Perhaps the fact that it followed the awkward 96 Drouhin Chambolle Musigny helped as well but this had none of the medicinal notes of the bottle a year or so ago. Good weight on the palate, the typical earthiness, red and dark fruit, fully integrated tannins, nice medium plus finish. Drinking very well now. 91-92

(Grivot Jean Clos de Vougeot) Deep ruby-red, fades to mahogany at the rim. The nose is forward and feral; coffee and chocolate covered leaves mix with roast meat. This is a surprisingly subtle wine, the concentration quickly creeping up on you into the mid-palate - and good concentration it is - but disappearing way-too fast in the finish. Furry, velvety tannins that are well-balanced to the rest of the wine. In isolation, not bad, if rather anonymous, but this was drunk with Mortet's '98 villages Gevrey, and on this day, everyone preferred the Mortet...
(Grivot Jean Clos de Vougeot) Medium-plus ruby with a brick rim. Slightly subdued nose which is sweet and primary with high toned red berry fruit, perhaps some blueberry too. Excellent red and black cherry fruit extract on the faintly oaky palate. The dry tannins are still evident - though not rough. This is currently a little austere, but a wine with a very sneaky, creamy length. Despite the lovely fruit, this wine is certainly less dense than the previous two, very fine though - I'd say this is nowhere near ready and would suggest waiting another 3-4 years before trying again.

So tannic and closed as to be literally undrinkable. Didn't see that one coming. Maybe shoulda. Tastes like it needs another 20 years.
