  • Beautiful and classic Coonawarra Cabernet. Showing beautifully, with cassis, hints of blood orange and some of the American oak lending interest. Lovely with roasted Flannery lamb loin. Love old Wynns.

  • The nose on the 1994 Wynns John Riddoch is big, flattering, generous, and immediately open, showing intense black cherry and cassis, a pronounced eucalyptus note, dark earth, and a hint of hazelnut chocolate. The oak is still not fully integrated and those vanillin notes distract and hold it back. But I’m impressed that the fruit is so decadent, yet the wine remains nimble with cool fruit and excellent balance (I guessed 13.5% ABV blind and that’s correct).

If the oak integrates, this could really shine. But this was best for the first 45 minutes we had it open. Will it develop long enough to integrate that oak?

  • Bought them from London .. 6 bottles in OWB and shipped to HK in 2015.
This bottle was then flew to Brisbane in 2018 and stored in my room.
Almost forgotten this wine and in May 2022.. took the wine to Melbourne,,, rested for 2 weeks.
    Food was traditional Chinese seafood.
The cork was almost intact and dry and the level was good. Decanted for 30 mins. Nose was a bit fruity but with hint of cedar. It's almost ready to drink after 30 mins ....some pencil shaving.. cedar and good reminiscent of nice complex Bordeaux. The bottle was shared among 8 people ... that was the unfortunate part. This was my 4th bottle and so far they never disappointed me. Very looking forward to the other 2 remaining bottles. A great 90s Aussie red.

  • This wine is still too young but if you must, I would decant it at least four hours to enjoy the wine at its best.

Dark, deep and plenty of colours, upon opening it was full of stewed dark fruits which continued into the body. Beyond this, there was not much else to reveal. One thing that was very obvious was the quality of the acid, structure, well integrated tannin and lovely finish to go with it.

Five hours later - transformation. The nose was much more expressive - cassis, berries, spice and a hint of cedar. The body was a revelation - dark cassis, mocha, expresso, quite earthy with full of complexities. What a yummy wine.

So drink now or best to leave it for another 5+ years.

  • Glass: Gabriel Gold
Bottle opened 1h before tasting. Nice dark color with a very, very slightly brown rim. The nose is so good: Typical Aussie eucalyptus & mint with perfect earthy dark berry notes. The palate is really nice with smooth and integrated tannins. Very solid body, with nice Cabernet fruit aromas and mint. Sadly, this is the first bottle with a shorter than normal finish (hopefully that is the only bottle with this problem). But nonetheless a very nice aged Aussie Cab. I will drink my remaining bottles within the next two years. But I would buy e.g. 97 and the other younger vintages blind.

BTW, I love Wynns as they produce solid wines that are not fatty or over extracted. Old school Aussie style. Thumbs up.
