  • - Ruby color - If you are ready to drink this wine, allow for some decanting time. Drank for a friend's birthday, so other wines to bide some time. Nice at first but, mostly, dried fruits. After 2 hours from opening, the strawberries rushed in to fill the glass; I spent several, delightful, interludes from conversation at this point just to commune with an incredible wine.

I would suggest an hour decant, at least. If you are wondering on pushing the drinking window of your only bottle, don't.

  • Meaty and earthy on the nose. Earthy and somewhat sweet on the palate. Meaty, cedar, tertiary notes of oak. A bit minty. Soy. Umami. Mushroom. Lots of leather. Great still. Drink now, but still has some acidity left to hold for a few more years.

  • Marmalade, reductive. Lovely and very enjoyable to drink.

  • The late David Lett, who established Eyrie Vineyards in Oregon’s Willamette Valley, was one of North America’s visionary wine pioneers, and this wine alone constitutes quite a legacy. A fragrant and expressive bouquet of red berries, pomegranate, pot potpourri and coniferous forest floor is the prelude to a wine of stunning weightlessness, vibrancy and transparency. This has aged splendidly thanks to its unusual balance and energy: Willamette meets Volnay!

  • The Eyrie Vineyards Vintage Tour (Ambonnay Champagne Bar, in Portland, Oregon): The noise is pretty light, showing dried strawberry scents and an interesting hint of wintergreen in the background. Dried cherries show on contact, and the fruit fills out on the mid palate. Dried skins and young fruit persist together. Clean and pure acid keeps things lively all the way through. The wintergreen from the nose lies low in the background, and light strawberry flavors linger into the finish. The feeling of young fruit on the palate really grabs my attention.
