Fantastic wine from a pretty average vintage. Nose has lovely red berry fruit, minerality, floral scents, and damp leaf litter/earth. It is classic Eyrie, but with a touch of sauvage type notes. The palate is beautiful with red fruits, floral notes, and a delightful sanguine salinity that is the essence of pinot noir. Very similar to some outstanding Volnay 1ers I have tasted, but with a definite Oregon note. A great example of what is possible from the WV.

Light enough to read your tasting notes through, with some bricking showing the age. On the nose, it's all ripe cherries and an earthy note that reminds me of an earthen wine cellar floor. There's also something savory that could be smoked meat or leather. In the mouth, this is beautiful and delicious. Cherry fruit and good acidity on contact. The acidity and the fine, well-integrated tannins extend the finish. Wonderful wine expressing a specific vintage and place.

The Eyrie Vineyards South Block Vertical 1975-2007 (McMinnville Grand Ballroom in McMinnville, Oregon): This wine is showing some aged character already, and I really enjoyed the effect. Overripe cherry scents mingle with dust and leather. Some barnyard notes are faint in the background, and after a little while in the glass, the cherries take on a tart character. The cherries on the palate are full, even, perfectly ripe, and downright delicious! To make it better, they stick around throughout the experience. Dusty earth shows early on the finish. Full and long acidity balances everything, and keeps it bright and interesting while the earth and cherry flavors run out to a long finish. This is easily the best wine from 2003 I've ever tasted. 93+
