  • drank next to the 1990 Leroy Beaux Monts. this 2009 had sparks flying from the glass.
    Elegant and close to perfection.

  • A surprising amount of sweet oak dominates the nose of deep red and black fruit and big time spice. Thick and rich on the palate. Amazing depth and great flavors but this needs a ton of time as right now it’s a little heavy handed.

  • Drank in a big lineup of Leroy Beaux Monts which included 12 wines from 93 to 2013. Virtually every wine was stellar in its own way, and each flight seemed to get better as we moved from younger to older. Vintage differences were apparent in some wines, but the only ones that were not religious experiences for me were the 11 and 13. All had incredible stemmy aromatics, layers of flavor, power, and spices for days. My favorites overall were 09, 02, 99, and 12, but so many others were right on the cusp. Thanks to Kevin our incredibly generous host for a great night

  • 94-95. I’m glad I gave this as much air as I did and from the get-go, this was very Vosne and very Leroy with toasty (oak) sesame seed, Asian spice/hoisin complexity with smoke, soil impressions, incense and a bit of tomato leaf with a salty/gamey quality to the fruit. Very fine tannins with appropriate acidity for the vintage, though I noticed more obvious oak on here than I did the ‘99 Beaux Monts tasted a few years back. A notch above the beautiful ‘03 vintage and more flattering today than the ‘06 (also tasted a years back). 94-95. Grand Cru quality.

  • When I first arrived (a few minutes early) for a “whole cluster” tasting, our generous host had just decanted this wine and handed me a tumbler with the sediment amidst a bit of the wine. Asking what I thought of it, I replied “motor oil”. Soon after, I connected the dots, recalling several Leroy encounters and the frequent “oil can” initial impression her wines can give off. So I knew there’d be a Leroy in the tasting. Later, tasted blind: oil can had left the building, replaced by deep, dense, ripe black fruit with an initial overlay of tomato leaf, tobacco and church incense; toasty oak sheen to it, this all gets buried by emerging violets, peony, rich loamy soil and hints of tar. The absolutely enchanting nose leads into a similar-profile palate, deep with extract, tensile mouthfeel, brooding tannin and overall complexity from beginning to end. The nose is best aspect right now, this should age eternally. The ‘86 Mouton of burgundy. Feels like a crime was committed seeing that this now goes for over 5 grand a bottle. Many thanks to our generous host John!!
