First de Courcel in many years; this was quite good and still fairly young; dark ripe fruits with earthy, leather notes. The palate has very good intensity and while the tannins are broad they are well integrated. Should do well for several more years.

Less detailed note than last time I drank this, but the overall impression of a wine 'turned up to 11' remains. Clear stemmy influence on the nose, but also plenty of extraction. Could have gone either way, but it does work here. Presumably the excellent vintage plays a part, too.
Rugiens Rex? King of Pommard (Zoom!): De Courcel's plot is in the middle at the top of the slope. It's one big block - the largest holding in the vineyard. A complete change in style vs wines #1 and #2 - De Courcel use 100% whole bunch and push ripeness to compensate.
Some maturity apparent from the colour - it's quite pale and a little bit browned. Mixed spice and the suggestion of flowers on the nose. Really light on its feet and dances across the palate, although I think that is partly the influence of the vintage. There's lots of red fruit, although it's not exactly a "fruity" wine, and it feels hidden behind a delicate gauze. It's austere almost to the point of bitterness but there's subtle power on the finish and it goes on and on with a delicious juicyness. Beautiful, and likely to improve; unlike some of the other wines tonight, this one kept improving with time in the glass.

#2 2010 courcel Les Rugiens Nose- darker red fruits, herbs, basil & some salty raw meat characteristics. Palate- darker red fruits, minerals, softer body with medium acid, herbs & a spice note. Well balanced, noticeable tannins, but a tad tight & still young. This is easily the most expensive wine at the table. Not quite sure it is worth the money. However, I can easily see this wine lasting another 10 years before it starts to reach any sort of maturity. Maybe by then I'll think of it as a bargain or at least worth the price of admission.
