  • The challenge of course is that Rugiens tastes pretty savory to start with, so how to assess its development after nearly 30 years ? Pleasant nose of leather and earth and very dark red fruit. Violets. Nothing leafy. Slightly sharp / edgy acid on the palate. Iron and dirt. Blood and guts and spice. Rooted in the soil. Tannins just a little dry, as they may always have been. Premier Cru length. Some power. And there is complex sweet fruit still behind all the Rugiens flavor components. But, sadly, these are overlayed by the effects of an elevage in more than a little new oak, from which, among other flavors, the wine may derive some of its sweetness. Commendably faithful to its Rugiens terroir. Still full of life. Holding up well. Fine (at least) if you are OK with the level of new oak, but it is too much for me. Bought on release. Next Day - The wine the same - but because I didn't notice the oak so much, I liked it more.

  • Opened a few hours before dinner and it was not nearly enough. The nose was beautiful from the get go: rugged Pinot fruit with a lovely spice element. The palate however was short and just not satisfying - it was just too tough. However, by the end of the evening, it had broadened and sweetened - to the point of being a very good wine. I would highly recommend decanting. Started out as a mid 80's wine. (92)

  • Mostly resolved, with definite Rugiens personality. Refined tannin, stony minerality, fleshy red fruit.

  • Still remarkably youthful; firm and powerful with rich, deep complexioned berried fruit and black cherries seasoned with gravel and touches of spice. There's a firm spine of tannin and acid beneath, but it's quite pleasurable to drink now with a sense of restrained power and really good balance.

  • Beautiful, almost candy-apple red. Nose of black olive and earth overlaying cinnamon red hots. Warm and pleasantly tannic, with a nice core of smokey red fruits and a slight acidic bite. Pleasant fruity finish. Amazingly, this wine is still very structured and vibrant. Delicious. Wish I had a few more bottles.
