Community Tasting Notes (2)

  • Purchased on release and stored in a temperature controlled cellar. And forgotten about.
I'm in a blind tasting group and I presented it with other much younger pinot noirs. Parker had said this Kalin was a poor man's La Tache and scored it 94. It was my ringer for the evening.
It had a lot of sediment, so I double decanted it and tried it before brown bagging it. It was brownish, but it was like an old Burgundy and delicious. Three hours later it wasn't the same. Fruit had dropped out and the bouquet had thinned. A lesson learned with old pinot noirs. I have plenty of 80's and 90's cabs that are still fine.
If you have one, drink up and don't decant. The sediment is stuck to the bottle and careful pouring would work.

  • 4th of July Blowout (Chez Rick): Interesting wine after the other Pinots. Very tart and acidic. That being said, this was infinitely better than the Pinots before it and with some air, it got even better. Lacks the complexity of a Burgundy at the same age, but it is more "burgundian" than anything else produced today save a few exceptions. Fruit was good and color was solid, so this is nowhere near decline.
