Wine Group Dinner. Nose of mushrooms, on the palate was a sweet cherry cola taste, medium body, and medium finish. The nose improved slightly but comments included disjointed (mine) and flawed. Terry's Rhone wine, sparkling wine, and Pinot Noir have always failed to impress me.

This wine was quite disappointing. I had high expectations given how stunning the 95 Ld chardonnay showed, but this wine did not follow suite. Developed nose, with toasted vanilla, earth, must, and something reminiscent of body odor. In the mouth, however, this wine falls apart. Sour cherries and lime juice give way to a solid core of sweet vinegar on the mid-palate, followed by strikingly bitter tannins and a smack of burning alcohol that had the distinct feel of mouthwash. At 13.5 percent, this wine ought not be showing so much heat, but it's structure has clearly been crippled in the past few years. Would have encouraged a drinking window that ended in 2008, but, alas, this is the current release.

Grapes from Demostene Ranch Vineyard in Alexander Valley. The current release from Kalin. This bottle was absolutely singing. Good upon opening, but improved over five hours of tasting. Dark red with some bricking around the edges. Unusual complexity on the nose and the palate as would be expected from a 13 year old Pinot. Bright primary red fruit along with fascinating cedar/tobacco secondary flavors. Excellent acidic backbone. An unusual and delightful wine.

I like what Kalin is trying to do, but out of 3 different offerings from them, I have yet to find a good.
