  • 1995 Kalin Cellars Pinot Noir, Cuvee DD, Sonoma County. Ohhhhh man. This was REALLY freaking good! Again I was fortunate to snag quite a few Kalin wines from the original owner who had them stored perfectly since release, and the amazing provenance is on full display. Beautiful ruby red color with some orange around the rim. On the nose it starts off a little funky but that blows off really quickly and is replaced with cinnamon and baking spice. In the mouth is where this really shines. Juicy, freshly picked strawberries on the entry, with tart cranberries on the mid-palate, and just waves of acidity. There is a ton going on here but it's almost refreshing to drink because of the acidity. The only slight knock is that falls a little short on the finish but we're really splitting hairs here. An outstanding wine and a true pleasure to drink.

  • Color has quite a bit of browning to its pale color. Nose is reminiscent of Madeira. Palate still with life and fruit. Drink up!

  • I am never quite sure what to expect when I open a Kalin wine. Always interesting, some have been pleasant and others ended up down the drain. This bottle was Much better than the last one of these. Still alive.... not really recognizable as pinot... dominated by the acidity...not particularly funky...with muted flavors that seemed too illusive to categorize

  • i have encountered unbelievable bottle variation with kalin wines. fortunately this bottle was good. high acid, but not out of balance. great funk to the wine. a certain delicacy. certainly marches to the beat of his own drum...

  • Similar notes to previous, but less patience this time around. I should have looked at my notes first, and recognized I needed a food pairing. This is pretty much unacceptable as a pinot and my only interest in it is as a completely esoteric bottle of wine. I continue to believe that you could put this into a blind tasting with barolos and fool a lot of people given the extreme oaking of this wine.
