1990 Le Pergole Torte opens with clear aromas of oxidation on the nose (meat broth and lovage); with a little aeration in the glass, this weakens and tertiary aromas become more attractive: damp earth, a hint of soy sauce and dried cranberries. On the palate, it shines with a nice, ripe acidity and fine sandy tannins. Balanced overall, the remnants of a red fruit go well with the subtle spice notes. Overall balanced and aged gracefully; very well stored bottles like this, still bring drinking pleasure. Nevertheless, the peak has passed and remaining bottles should be drunk.

From the wine list at Charlie Bird. Completing our trio of '90s ('90 Verset and '90 La Chapelle) - we decided to try the Le Pergole Torte. The nose had that Italian earthy aroma with a hint of mustiness which blew off quickly. Compared to the two Rhone wines, this had a more grounded earthiness and some spice, fully mature fruit, medium finish.

Dark brick ruby. 1mm of rim separation. Initially a little closed. After about 30 mins, savoury brooding nose, dark cherry fruit, spicy, liquorice and leather. Touch of VA but compliments rather than detracts. Still quite young and powerful on the palate, tannins are well integrated but still a little grainy. Wonder ripe and spicy mouthfeel. Really, really long. One of the best from Italy in 1990?!

A stunning wine, fresh and forward, with impressive depth and balance. Red fruit notes of dried cherries mesh seamlessly with complementary truffle, spice, soy and balsam flavors. A touch of VA adds, not detracts, from this beauty. The CT drinking window is ten years to short based on this well-stored bottle.

Another lost Friday afternoon gathering – Provenance, Power of Blind tasting and loving M. Gibourg CV (Charlie Palmer - Washington DC): From the get go, my wine of the flight. Absolutely captivating fully mature nose displaying decadent black and red fruit, blackberry, dry cherry, a hint of vanilla/cedar/oak, tobacco, autumn leaves, cinnamon and truffle. Fully integrated harmonious and rich palate, perfect amount of acidity and mineral, nicely integrated tannins and a lovely seamless finish that ends with truffle and cherry. What is remarkable is it gains so much richness with a couple hours of air. Absolute pleasure. Once again, it makes me to wonder how great the 90 Riserva would be.
