Dinner with the "White wine gang" at Mini Tanker, and this was the first red which made an appearance after all the lovely whites and one Champagne as well!
Bottle breathed 1.5 hours, this was clearly an Italian from the aciditiy medium+ levels. But alas, I guessed BDM. Slight thinness on the palate, but lovely evolving and ripe strawberry notes on the mid-palate made up for this.
Nicely balanced Barolo, with both ripe fruit as well as minerality. Medium-body, with a light tannic structure. Cherries and rose petals on the medium-long finish too. This is in a good drinking window now.
The Barolo vintage of 2011: Extremely hot, almost scorching August, which led to rapid sugar build-up in the grapes. This forced producers to harvest sooner than they might have liked (or run the risk of making wines very high in alcohol and with cooked aromas and flavours).
Fortunately, timely September rains allowed late-ripening Nebbiolo to recover somewhat (especially those grapes that had endured less heat thanks to northern exposures or thick canopies).
Towards the end of the 2011 harvest, most producers were worried about the eventual quality of their bottled wines. It is clearly described that as a testament to the hard work and skill of Barolo’s producers, in general, the 2011s have turned out much better than expected.

PNP- outstanding Barolo, perfect balance between fruit and minerals, fully integrated but should last for several more years. Paired with miso glazed pork loin and seared duck breast.

A bit raw and not giving
Lacking opulence
Will give another chance after 3 hours decanted
