Pop and pour. Aromas of dark fruits, vanilla and tannins. Also some wet wool. Tannic, angular and austere on the palate, and not very agreable at the moment. These are actually same notes as six years ago. Keep on storing and hope for the best. The score reflects that the hopes come true.

WIMPS Burgundy 27th Oct 23 (La Trompette): complex and dark fruited, the tannic structure is still there making it great with the venison. Seems to open as meal progressed. Quite a statement. Just behind the Chambertin today. Robust but lovely.

Some remaining red and dark fruit, slightly tart, some mineral and leather notes, but a bit thin and austere. Decent, but not memorable. Not sure this wine is going anywhere.

Right in line with many of the previous notes. Huge wine, intense rustic nose of blackberry, currant, and medicinal cherry liqueur which eventually evolved into menthol & the hallmark iron/ink of NSG. Tannins are still surprisingly sharp given the age, overall texture is definitely reminiscent of young-ish Barolo... LOTS of gritty tannins, slightly dirty quality, alcohol felt like much more than 13%, out of balance & clunky. Palate was vague for a bottling of this caliber & acid couldn't keep up with the rest of the wine. Never quite came together in the glass over the course of 3hrs.
Not representative of my past experience with Gouges, they're usually reliable & good quality for the price. Bottle could just be in an awkward stage. Still has a lot of life but not sure where this is going, might be best when it gets tertiary in another decade or two.
I've got three more of these, will circle back in a few years. If you're determined to drink now, decant for a few hours, keep it at cellar temp & have some fatty food nearby to help with the tannins.

Lightly maderized with so much NSG earthiness on the nose.
