I love this wine and in the 2014 it is verging on being skinny and narrow. It certainly lacks generosity. But it is the essence of Northern Rhone Syrah. It is cheap too, but it is difficult to track down older vintages.

Bottle off wine list over lunch at Avenue87. Appearance is clear, deep intensity, ruby colour with thin garnet rim. Thin legs. Nose medium+ intensity, with intermittent whiffs of barnyard, and then aromas of black pepper spice, fresh red cherries, blackberries, underlying floral violets. Developed. On the palate, dry, juicy high acidity, medium- alcohol (12.5%), integrated medium tannins, medium body. Medium flavour intensity, with flavours of juicy blackberries, red cherries, black cherries, some tobacco leaf, gentle black pepper. Medium+ finish. Good quality. Very integrated and grounded. Somehow less energy than other vintages I tried before. Could be that 2014 was a challenging vintage for Northern Rhone. Drink up and enjoy.

The wine is slowly getting out of hibernation. Showing better on nose and palate than I remember from the last bottle. Nice syrah nose and a nice palate. Good fruit and acidity, nice wine.

This is a well-structured, dry and dusty St Joseph showing plenty of powerful black fruits. The midpalate has a nice peppery overlay and the tannins are powdery and forgiving. Good VFM.
