Sous bouis, damp earth, truffle, figs, autumn leave and dried fruit on the nose. It still retained sufficient fruit and acidity to enjoy, but clearly on its downtrend. Quite nice.

Dark amber. Perfect from the get go! Intense nose of forest floor, damp earth, beef stock, offal casserole, leather boots. Gorgeously pure and well delineated flavours with a sweet vinous core of currants, underbrush, pine, menthol, all sorts of savoury nuances, rustic meaty stew, quite a prominent peppery component, silky mouthfeel, a fanning finish and great length. 1977 is one of those poorly rated vintages but every bottle I've had has been a peer to a '78 or an '85, and thankfully when you can find them they're extremely affordable due to the vintage reputation. Verdict is that you can easily cellar Robert Chevillon 40-50+ years, even in a so called bad vintage.
