  Opened with friends for a Tri-Nations taste-off this French entrant led the field after 6 hours opened in the Audouze fashion. The colour was remarkably dark and deeply coloured with a nose of blackcurrant, creme de cassis, Asian spices and Vosne earth. The palate was beautifully balanced with weightless intensity and a fine spine of lovely savoury tannins that persisted beautifully. This is still a rich black fruited wine 21 years after vintage.

  Drank last nite without decanting. Nose was still quite lovely, generous floral and red cherry notes. Medium body, lots of red cherries and spice, but more muted than my previous tasting. Some forest-like notes with some mushrooms. Finish is a bit sharp and slightly off-putting. Still, overall an enjoyable wine that aged pretty well.

  I had high hopes for this wine but thought I had better drink up given the mixed CT reviews. The bouquet was beautiful and complex with floral and herbal notes overlaying cherry. The initial flavor was also nice with soft mature fruit and a beautiful round mouthful of umami. Unfortunately the finish is disappointing as it is thin and a bit shrill unpleasant acidity. It rare to have such a combination of such a lovely midpalate that fads so quickly especially for a Grand Cru vineyard.

  1996 & 1999 Vosne Grand Cru Dinner (Holland Park): An oddity. This was probably the poorest showing wine on the night, especially when placed next to a tremendous bottle of Arnoux’s 1999 Romanee St Vivant. The nose had a strange twang of green peas and soap powder along with more typically cherry notes. Odd. The palate was okay. Coming across as a more of a decently drinkable per Cru rather than a Grand Cru Burgundy from a top-notch maker. There was an elegant strength to it, with powdery tannins undergirding fresh flavours of cherries and berries lined with a little floral note. The finish seemed a little meaner, fading away with a little orange fizz and then more of that soap powder note picked up on the nose and a hint of something that reminded me of musty plastic. We did not think this was flawed, but it was certainly a strange wine. Pleasant at points, but certainly the weakest of the night. 91-92
