Valandrau vertical (1991-2020) (Fribourg): Selected tasting notes from a complete Valandraud vertical (1991-2020) hosted by a collector with an estate representative. Main observation was that both the work the estate did during the transition phase 2000-2012 is clearly bearing fruit in more recent vintages, further helped by warmer growing seasons that are favorable for this cool site in St Emillon. Additional comments included in the tasting story.
Tasting note: This was decanted prior to serving. A red cherry fruit, some heat and hence with a slightly chemical touch. But nice floral accents, earth and mineral layers - but somewhat blurry due to the heat – which was probably hard to pull off in 2017. But the palate is more fresh, even if borderline unripe. Grainy tannins. Tasted better than this note reads!

Better in bottle than in barrel, (Which is always a good sign), the deeply colored wine is filled to the brim with smoke, licorice, espresso bean and black cherries. Lush, round and full-bodied, the finish is showy and long. This should continue filling out nicely.

2017 UGC Des Bordeaux, San Francisco, I always love this wine but not the price, nose of black fruit, plum, new oak, and sweet fruit, medium body, sweet, rich fruit on the palate, very tasty, needs 4 years to peak and earn a higher score, 30,000 bottles produced, 90% Merlot, 7% Cabernet Franc, 3% Cabernet Sauvignon, very soft tannins present, medium/long finish.

Amsterdam UGCB Tasting and Winemakers' Dinner (Beurs van Berlage / Eden Hotel): Trade tasting, brief note. Sexy and succulent but elegant and refined, fresh but with rich fruit, very finely grained tannins, earth and flowers, complete and flowing, perfectly harmonious, wonderful length. Star quality.
