Some Barolo Stars: Three superstar Barolos from the 2016 vintage tasted side by side. All three showed the amazing potential of this great vintage. Winner was the Burlotto Monvilgiero (98 pts, tasted double blind) due to its singularity, purity and the most Burgundian structure. Close second, the Sandrone Le Vigne (97 pts, tasted double blind), highly complex, superb purity and an ultra-fine structure. Not far behind, the Vietti Ravera (96 pts), a mix between the two other wines in terms of aroma profile and structure. Like all three, already quite approachable with some time.
TN: At first, this was two, three steps below the other two. Only about after 90 minutes in the glass, this came out of its shell and with every minute it came closer to the level of the two other wines. Quite expressive on the nose and palate with layers and layers of sweet strawberries, some raspberries and red currant but mostly strawberries. Additionaly layers of tar, tobacco, wet earth and crushed rocks with some floral aromas, mostly roses as well as some spices. Vietti is certainly on the rather modern side of things but still clearly a Barolo through and through. Very fine, velvety tannins, good acidity, creamy texture, no excess weight and a long, expanding finish. 96+ pts.
Decanting: Decanted for roughly 90 minutes which was not enough. As mentioned above it improved considerably after a long time in the glass. This would have needed long hours in the decanter (which is always a risk with young wines).
Single-blind. A beautifully ripe and sweet aroma profile, with lots of herbal character, rose pedal and coal-like mineral notes around the edges. An alternating combination of fresh and dried herbs. Palate pretty wild (more so than Sandrone Le Vigne 16 and Burlotto Monvigliero 16 in the line-up) but all in great balance and the tannins are soft and round. Time in the glass added sexy, sweet notes and an amazing glaze to the texture. Another great Barolo from 2016.

Return to Piemonte!; 11/25/2021-12/4/2021 (Castello di Sinio, Alba, other various locations): Again a vineyard that I have traditionally liked quite a bit. Since the last time we had this wine it scored 100 points so it seems it is not just me that was taken with it. Some darker red fruits, rose petals, a slightly interesting and elegant style to it. To me it’s a bit on the tight side at the moment and yet there’s just enough that pokes through to keep you intrigued by the wine. Very well done.
Vietti's 2016 Ravera is a stunning, gorgeous Barolo sporting a perfumed nose of exuberant, wild red fruit, mixed florals, and white pepper. Already showing outsized power in a seemingly weightless body with a framing of bright acidity. Excellent and I don't think you need to wait forever to enjoy this but best starting 2026.

Very shut down on PNP. Unfortunately no juice was saved to try the next day. Will be afraid to open another for another 5 years at least.
