Community Tasting Notes (15) Avg Score: 91.6 points

  • Medium reddish-purple garnet in color; almost opaque. Full, forward & attractive nose of ripe fruit aromas of cherries, cassis & plums with earthy/dusty & herbal overtones, floral notes, herbs, graphite, spices, tobacco, cocoa/coffee, minerals & a hint of cedar in the background. Medium bodied with a good concentration of balanced & smooth textured, ripe fruit flavors of cherries, blueberries & plums with herbs, minerals, spices & a hint of oak/vanilla. Lingering finish. Drinks well at present with decanting & extended airing but should develop further with additional aging at which time it may merit a higher score (93+). An indicative blend of 59% Cabernet Sauvignon & 41% Merlot.

  • Day 1 felt a bit thinner on fruit and heavy handed with spice and oak. Day 2-3 the wine is framed much more elegantly and there is more balance. Currant, pomegranate, bramble, cassis. Graphite, tobacco, baking spices. Tannins still a bit tightly wound but fine. Nice acidity, good body and finish ain't a slouch. I'm thinking another 5-10 and it'll be hitting a peak. Tasty juice but needs time to breathe right now - big time!

  • My last note wasn't in keeping with some others on cellartracker. Re-tasting the 2018 Haut-Batailley today, however, I'll double down - the experience is a near-identical facsimile of my last note. This is a wine that clearly struggled with the heat of the vintage and it's all right if you lean toward Oakville valley floor, but not really in keeping at all with classic Pauillac (and several Pauillac estates did manage to make 2018s that honestly represented the vintage without ending up hot or jammy).

  • Had a glass of it at Cafe Lavinal at Ch. Lynch Bages. Full bodied and intense and of course a bit too young. Nonetheless already enjoyable.

  • A hint of floral, a lot of earthy notes on the nose. The alc is noticeable even just sniffing. On the palate, medium plus acidity, tannin is ok, not too harsh. Very average and unremarkable wine.
