Community Tasting Notes (18) Avg Score: 88 points

  • SCORE: 7/10

NOSE: Interlaced aromas of natural & elegantly ripe black fruit with some hints of red, gentle black pepper, and the beginnings of tertiary forest floor notes - mainly subtle clove, with some cedar & leather.

PALATE: Medium/Medium+ body, medium acidity & tannin, tasting notes matching the aromas with the addition of slightly more prominent red fruits and also slightly more juicy than expected. A reasonable length to the finish.

CONCLUSION: After almost 8 years in bottle this was in a very good place, and did not require decanting. Quite well balanced, approachable with some complexity and complimented by nascent maturity. Perhaps 10 years would have been the ideal drinking window, notwithstanding vintage variation to form a generalised view of this wine. Good value for the UK retail price.

SIDE NOTE: Having tasted a number of other Guigal bottlings, of many levels and more than a handful of vintages, I am of the opinion that although a good producer of dependable quality the majority of their wines are not quite ready to drink on first release. To avoid disappointment with current release vintages, from tightness or subdued expressiveness, I'd recommend storing most for 2-3 more years or (not as ideal) a similar number of hours decant before consumption.

  • Dark fruit with a touch of earth. Great QPR.

  • 2021 Guigal single vineyard cote rotie release dinner (Bel & Brio, Barangaroo): Slightly dusty, almost a smidge of taint, savoury, meaty, olives, blackberry with time. Wetly juicy, slightly sour fruit, chalky tannins are drying, it's a bit out of whack for me. Alcohol intrudes a little on the finish. Nah.

  • A learning experience. On opening, this was almost undrinkably tight and tannic, little nose except barnyard, acid like grapefruit juice. A day later, similar if a bit mellower at the start of the evening. By the end (no we didn't drink that much) it had loosened up, showing pleasing juicy syrah fruit, acid still prominent but under control, nose of young plum and fruit blossoms, on its way to being very nice indeed. If I can buy more I will cellar some for 3-5 years, and plan on a 24-hour decant for any that I drink early. A lot of promise here but nowhere near ready to drink.
