  • 2019 Visit to Cromwell (Central Otago, NZ): Yellow spice, citrus and floral notes on bouquet. A palate with the citrus towards grapefruit and tangelos. Relatively rich with quince and yellow apple. Good slaty minerality. Decent acidity. Good length. A broader expression than the Block 2, which I preferred.

  • The wine is clear, with pale lemon color, and watery rims.
On the nose the wine is clean, with medium aroma intensity of butter scotch, sweet spices, vanilla, ripe white fruits, melon, pear, peach, lemon zest, yeast, oak spices.
On the palate the wine is dry, with medium acidity, medium body, medium alcohol, medium plus flavors intensity of ripe white tropical fruits, banana, melon, peach, pear, ripe lemon, vanilla, sweet oak spices.
The wine is of a very good quality, due to its length and complexity. It is quite youthful at time of tasting, and showing relatively oaky character, which can mild down a bit with further aging, and expose more of fruits layers, along with secondary aromas and flavors profile.

  • Tasting Ground official tasting, Felton Road part 2: 2018 The Whites (Oinoscent): Mendoza clone Chardonnay from Block 6 was whole bunch pressed, settled overnight and flowed to barrel by gravity in the underground cellar. Fermentation with indigenous yeasts in seasoned French oak (no new oak) was followed by a long and complete malolactic over the spring and summer. After 16 months in barrel the wine was racked to tank for bottling in late-August 2019. The wine was not fined or filtered.

The wine more powerful and dense than Block 2 in the nose. There is a thicker oak frame, its flintier showing citrus, expands in the glass.
The palate shows more complexity and depth again, more citrus fruit, green apple, pear, quince, high acidity and long finish.
Outstanding quality and still a baby

  • Good for sure. Pleasant. But at this price level I would expect more.
