  • First of 3 ($49.99) from online wine clearinghouse #1. On the nose and palate, vibrant notes of black and red cherries, black currants, black plums, earthy minerality, cedar, creamy nuttiness, ground spice, baking spice, crushed rocks, dark florals and lighter citrus, coconut and feral notes. Medium ruby, full bodied, thick legs. Powerful tannins and acidity, balancing and mostly integrating after about an hour, no heat. Excellent complexity, intensity and persistence. With my love of IGTs and Napa really coming to the fore in the past year, this reminds me to say, not so fast. This was expectedly fractious out of the bottle—I mean, this was a bit of an experiment since I have 3 bottles, but I’ve just begun drinking my ‘13s in the past 6-12 months—but found a really nice balance in an hour or so, skewing modern but with very classic Tuscan terroir notes, with notable length and depth, and it held consistently through the end of the bottle on night 3 (I had a glass and a half on night one, then abstained on night #2 as I went to Slow Wine). This is at the very start of its drinking window, with a better than decent chance for incremental improvement and an almost certainty for at least holding this level for an absolute minimum of 5 years, likely double that. This was an insanely good match with red sauce spicy chicken pasta, and I have no doubt it would be equally outstanding with meat, game and heartier poultry dishes, but it also went down very easily on its own. Wonderful stuff, and quite insane qpr at my purchase price. Wildly recommended.

  • This was good day one but exceptional day two. Silky mouth feel, flavors of cherry, earth, tobacco and black tea. Yummy. On day three it was lush and rich and welcoming. Remarkable, really.
