Blind, from Magnum. Deep ruby purple, staining the glass. First nose was very reductive, I find his syrah to be always extremely closed and shut down after opening. Sometimes decanting helps, but in general his wines are meant to be aged for more than a decade at least. Sexy, attractive nose of spice, dark blue fruits, olive brine and smoke. Seamless palate with grip and finesse, long chewy finish reminiscent of peppery spice and blackberries. Great potential here, forget it in the cellar for at least 10 years.

Allemand Chaillot survey (Chicago, IL): Initially, I really, really loved this -- it was showing such exuberant red and black fruit, bright florals, and just a slight tinge of the classic syrah salinity, pepper, and olive (there's gotta be some word to describe the collection of those flavours). Fresh and elegant, with a lightness and elegance that is bolstered by the intense minerality here. Coming back to this at the end of the dinner though, it was clear that this didn't have quite the same length as some of the other wines. (I also want to point out that the variability in impressions over just a few hours means you should take all my notes with a giant hunk of Himalayan pink salt.)

Decanted 6 plus hours. Way too young at this point with only tart red fruit, violets and a touch of black pepper coming through. Neither acidic or tannic but just closed. Potential for the future is unlimited but needs at least 10 years.

Generously shared by a friend and served blind. Initially the alcohols were a bit forward, even after a 2 hour decant, so much so that I thought this was a central coast syrah..
However with another hour in the glass the savory notes of black olive, meat, and plush raspberry, sweet blackberry fruits emerged. Really forward, and not at all to soon to enjoy. Still, for the tariff, I’m not sure this is all that rare of a bird.
