Birthday lunch for KG, Alex and William (Hua Ting, Orchard Hotel): A lovely mature Pomerol - obviously not from the strongest vintage, but very enjoyable nonetheless. The nose was a classic mix of tobacco and spice and cocoa with a some plummy notes and a little toch of funky earthiness. Pretty nice. I liked the palate too. It was rather mid-bodied, but what it lacked in depth and substance was more than made up for with charm and elegance, with fresh flavours of dark cherries and cassis wrapped up in creamy tannins and nice acidity. There was a nice fleshiness about the fruit in spite of the vintage. Good finish too, every energetic and fresh, with flecks of cocoa and spice drifting into the distance. Nothing to really shout about, but this was a very pelasant, mellow Pomerol.

Funky barnyard and leather with tons of dried twigs , black truffles and black earth with dusty cupboard. Umami soy lifted dark almost cassis sweet berry fruits. Quite thick and viscous for such a weak vintage. Holding up well. Has an almost oily palate.

Big surprise. Strong, deep black color. Good balance and slight tannine. Black chocolate and peppery beginning, fruit and cedar in the long finish. Best of all 1981 we tasted (Las Cases, Lafite, Pichon Comtesse)

Consistent with other 81s tasted. Lots of sulfur on the nose. Fun secondary characteristics.

Mocha ,leather and soft plumpish fruits but with bitter roots and oak. Textbook claret that tells more of left banks than right. Amazingly fresh.
