Really terrific. Full-bodied. lush and fruity without being syrupy. Plenty of structure and a smooth texture. Good complexity with sharp acidity and a long finish. Nice mix of red and dark fruits.

This has always been my favorite wine from Merry Edwards and was again for 2018 in a line up of the wines. Classic. I think of ME as being more round lush in style without being over the top and still having the acidity and balance to show the depth of the wine. Not as precise in style or age-worthy perhaps as Williams Selyem but equally good in my mind. I opened a 2007 ME Olivet for comparison which showed how much the fruit changed to a darker more funky burgundy-like wine. It was good but shows if you like ME's bright fruit don't age this too long - 8 years may be ideal. I wasn't expecting the fruit on the 2007 to have aged as fast as it did (warmer vintage).

Medium ruby color. Vibrant, deep aromas with raspberry, bright cherry, fresh strawberries, with complex elements of clove, rose petals, pine forest. On the palate, this is crisp and elegant on a medium/full-bodied frame with velvety but structured tannins – the balance is pristine. Delicious cherries, pomegranate, plum, raspberry fruit, tangy but deep. Complex elements of pine sap, crunchy leaves, tobacco, bay leaf, rose petals, just all sorts of things going on. Pure, delicious, give this air or five years of age and listen to it sing.

The under ripe and primary nose offers aromas of crushed strawberry, pastel florals, red plum and tar. Medium plus in weight, the broad tannin offers surprising depth and smoothness given its tender age. The acid is likewise smooth and lush. Together, theyform a pleasant substantive structure. Flavors include bright muddled strawberry and raspberry, sweet huckleberry tartness, scorched earth, unsweetened cinnamon, red plum, and red currant. There is a lot going on with this wine, but in order to transform its prettiness into depth, the fruit will need to shed its tart edge. Only time will tell, and on that front I’d be tempted to give it at least four or five years of aging.
