  Probably the best ‘Lagrein Riserva Abtei’ from the Klosterkellerei Muri-Gries (Benedictine monastery) that I have tasted so far. It is sourced from the ‘Stampfer’ and ’Haringer’ vineyards (quartz-porphyry soils) in the historical quarter of Gries-Moritzing (city of Bozen). Made with 100 percent Lagrein grapes, an indigenous Tyrolean grape varietal found only in the region around the city of Bozen (South Tyrol). Aged for sixteen months in oak barrels (of which 40 percent were new). Very deep black-inky color without a trace of evolution. Decanted, one hour prior to tasting. The complex bouquet exhibits intense aromas of black cherry, elderberry, eucalyptus and also notes of new leather and pencil lead. The palate reveals an opulent, velvety-textured wine with layers of ripe bramble and red forest fruit, a fabulous concentration, great depth, present but polished tannins and a finely integrated acid structure. Long impressive aftertaste. An outstanding Lagrein wine that is superbly drinking now, but I'm sure it will reward cellaring for another 4-5 years.
  
  Waarschijnlijk de beste 'Lagrein Riserva Abtei' van de Klosterkellerei Muri-Gries (Benedictijnerklooster) die ik tot nu toe heb geproefd. Hij werd geteeld in de 'Stampfer' en 'Haringer' wijngaard (kwarts-porfierbodems), gelegen in de historische wijk Gries-Moritzing van de stad Bozen. Gemaakt met 100 percent Lagrein-druiven, een autochtone Tiroolse druivenvariëteit, die alleen voorkomt in de omgeving van de stad Bozen (Zuid-Tirol). De wijn rijpte zestien maanden in eikenhouten vaten (waarvan 40 percent nieuw). Zeer diep inktzwart van kleur zonder enig spoor van evolutie. Gedecanteerd: één uur voor consumptie. Het complexe bouquet biedt intense aroma's van zwarte kers, vlierbes, eucalyptus en ook nuances van nieuw leder en grafiet. In de mond: een opulente, fluweelzachte wijn met pakken rijp bramen- en rood bosfruit, een excellente concentratie, grote diepgang, presente maar fraai versmolten tannines en een fijne, perfect geïntegreerde aciditeitsstructuur. Indrukwekkend lange afdronk. Een uitstekende Lagrein-wijn die nu al heerlijk op dronk is, maar zeker nog 4-5 jaar op dit niveau zal blijven.
