  • The ‘Lagrein Riserva Abtei’ is the flagship wine of the Klosterkellerei Muri-Gries (Benedictine Monastery, city of Bozen - South Tyrol / originally from the Swiss town of Muri / Aargau canton), made from 100 percent Lagrein grapes, an indigenous Tyrolean grape varietal found only in the region around the city of Bozen. A beautifully complex wine, produced from selected grapes of three vineyards (‘Stampfer’,’Haringer’ and ‘Klosteranger’). Aged for 16 months in barriques (of which 40 percent were new). Very deep black-inky color with some violet shades at the rim. Upon opening the wine was a bit reserved in aromas and taste, but after about two hours in the decanter it unfolded to reveal intense scents of black cherry, forest fruit, tobacco, new leather, graphite and some sweet vanilla tones. The palate shows a massive, extremely concentrated wine with amazing amounts of powerful black fruit, pronounced but already quite harmonious tannins, the whole supported by a well-integrated acidity. Persistent finish. A very authentic ‘Südtiroler Lagrein’, still very youthful, but with an enormous potential to improve. Drinking window: now – 2020.

  • Monthly Tasting Group LTB 2014-08; Monastery wines. (By EvA & TdJ): Deep dark purple and almost black. In the bouquet a lot of dark cherries and spiciness. On the palate ripe dark berries and dark cherries, a firm dose of good oak, lactic impressions. Enormously concentrated and juicy wine. Nice already, but still very youthful. Give the wine a few years of ageing.
