Two Months in Roma; 9/6/2022-10/28/2022 (Rome, Italy): From the wine list at Armando Al Pantheon, Rome. We had the ‘17 the other night and it was awesome so when we saw this on the list we decided to try. Served chilled but Somm suggested we let it warm up a bit so no ice bucket which was great as it’s expression intensified as it got warmer. Not quite as aromatic as the’17 but this was lovely with lots of structure and waxiness, stone fruit and freshly mown fields. With farro polpettine, pasta amatriciana and veal saltimboca. Delicious!

Slaughterer offers some great information and tasting notes below. I would add that I find a puréed mango / peach quality to the wine; it is not as austere as those tasting notes may suggest. The most distinctive quality is a profound waxiness, which corresponds to a riesling-like petrol / rubber aroma. I also detect an unwelcome note of acetone / sharpie / nail polish. Overall, it is a joy to taste a wine this distinctive and intense, though it is not an instinctively delicious wine.

A small-production cru-level Derthona made from a 1,4 hectare plot with spontaneous fermentation in steel tanks after 60 hours of skin contact. Floral bouquet with apple in it. Salty and lightly bitter palate of watermelon, green walnut, honey, with a finish of ginger root. Balanced right now, but the power of the wine suggests it can age another 10 years at least.

Together with Scallop, egg cream & truffle. Fantastic pairing. Great body with a well integrated acidity.
