'Aged Aussies' Dinner (Joseph's Place, Wong Chung Hang, Hong Kong): Still almost opaque dusky red lightening at the edges. Nose is a wow! of candied, jammy red fruits...particularly raspberry and confit strawberry. Palate is bright, alive, good black and red fruit... still fresh if slightly confit. Wow.... on the edge of silence creating. So long and alive. 95+

NOTE: For another vintage drank alongside the 1971. Popped and poured. Semi-opaque ruby colour with hints of separation but which turned out just to be very heavy sediment. Nose is wonderfully fresh and aromatic - blind, you'd guess 1998. Palate is eqully fresh, lifted, resonant, with strawberry coming out like a really elegant old Burgundy - wow, head-filling, really, really stunningly good. This is giving the 1971 Grange a run for its money. Unfortunately, after 30 minutes it descended into a sugary monotone although it did pick itself up again with further extended time in the glass. Gosh, what a treat!

Drunk at the Mandarin Grill - I brought this along as the "ring-in" amongst a few Rhones, served blind. Pleasingly it not only performed well but confused those that didn't know. Initially the (extremely powerful) nose exhibited some "Bret" characteristics which dissipated steadily as the evening wore on. The wine more than held up through the night and indeed continued to improve. There was definitely some sweetness which probably aided it's disguise amongst the Rhones suggesting a decent amount of Shiraz in the blend (I don't know what the percentage was). I don't know the cost of this when it was released (presumably in 1972) but it is testament to both the '71 vintage and to how well Penfolds (continue to) make this wine.

Garagiste - Classic Wines of Australia (Blackbird - Chicago IL): Old Bordeaux aromas with cassis, tobacco, dark chocolate along with plum and black cherry. A trace of Shiraz-esque sweetness. Excellent length and finesse and balanced and well spiced finish.
