Community Tasting Notes (12) Avg Score: 90.3 points

  • Sonoma Bordeaux blend 2019 Chateau St. Jean Cinq Cépages (on sale, Costco, $40). Mid-dark garnet, rim variation, viscous (14.9 alc.); herbaceous, cassis, ripe grape, berry nose; mid acids; mid+ tannins; a little tight; semi-long chewy berry finish; needs time. 16.5/91.

  • Deep ruby color. Bold aroma on the nose. A complex flavorful wine with notes of cassis and other black fruit. This is a wine that will last for another 12-15 years. Lasting finish.

  • A fine Cab blend. Tannins are present, as is fruit. We'll balanced with a medium finish. $40 (Costco after $30 reduction) is the right price for this bottle. $70 is overpriced, $100+ is laughable.

  • A blend of the five classic Bordeaux grapes, Chateau St. Jean's 2019 Cinq Cépages is an opaque crimson wine with loads of dark bramble fruits, black plums, morello cherries, baking spices, licorice and dried herbs. Full-bodied, low-to-medium in acidity and with tame alcohol (despite being listed as 14.9%), it wraps its fruit with plentiful fine-grained tannins and an abundance of toasted oak. Solid in the middle and long on the finish, this is a ripe, New World, fruit-forward rendition of something from the left bank of Bordeaux. Although the plentiful tannins are manageable at this point, the wood will require some cellar time in order to (hopefully) fully integrate. I suspect that a higher score will be warranted with such cellaring. Tasted over three hours from a bottle that had been Vinturi-decanted, this requires at least 90 minutes in carafe in order to fully strut its stuff at this early stage. Drink 2026-2039.

  • Gorgeous to look at, viscous. Red fruit nose. Nice to taste, a bit sweet, but decent for Costco’s discounted $39.98. 5-12-15-8: 90/100.
