This wine is utterly wonderful: great blend, fabulous nose (hello violets and pomegranate), a palate of ripe red fruit that expands as the time passes; an elegant offering that doesn’t leave me wanting for pizzazz. I don’t want to mention the ROI because that’s not what’s important here—it’s just a great bottle of wine. . . And, yep, it’s a great value. . .

Ambitious vault and sticks the landing. A cheap GSM going for it. Big alcohol, rich fruits, simmered concentration. Jammy, new oak, smoked meat and black marker sweet core.

Santa Barbara, Calif. 2020 Margerum M5, $30. Good value in Grenache-based Rhone blend (Grenache, Syrah, Mourvèdre, Cinsault, and Counoise). Mid-ruby, viscous; red fruit, pomegranate, light floral Grenache nose; mid-plus acids; medium tannins; good red fruit finish. 16 UC Davis scale, 90 other scales.

Same note as previous bottle: Drinks well above its price point, this Rhone blend offers rich dark red berry fruit and elegance.
