3 years ago this was easily a 90 point wine, but it is definitely past its prime. Very one dimensional, no fruit, very shot finish, very mediocre. This should be drank now or never.

This has started to settle down. Nose is driven by the red fruit of grenache. Palate is spicy blackberry, raspberry, and black olive. Mid palate is missing. Noticeable oak on the backend. Decent acid remaining and angular tannin structure. Nice mid week quarter.

(Last of four wines served at Thanksgiving 2012) WOTN. From magnum. Fields of flowers in the bouquet with some initial tart impressions on the palate. As the air fills in the wine develops a melange of black and blue fruit flavors, mostly blackberry and blueberry notes. Hannah -- always the M5 enthusiast -- thought it tasted "like being in Mrs. Knott's kitchen" at Knott's Berry Farm -- must have been the boysenberry notes. This kicked off a lively discussion about what people tasted . . . "Ripe peaches" . . . "Nutmeg and other spices" . . . "Candied raspberries" . . . "Cumin" (cumin???). Balanced with a nice range of hot mulled spices, with a gentle flinty quality. Finish comes up a bit short which prevents this from earning a higher rating. Delicious, however, and really kicked up the energy level at the dinner table as the tryptophan started to creep in.

(Margerum M5, Santa Barbara County) M5 is Doug Margerum’s Rhône-style blend of five grape varieties from 12 of Santa Barbara’s best vineyards. This version is deep purple in the center, extending right to the edge of the glass. On the nose, the wine is packed with blue fruit and tertiary aromas of violets and Oreo cookies (dark chocolate and cream). M5 is juicy on the palate, with well-balanced acidity and tannin and a fairly long finish. It reminds me of a young St. Joseph: bright, minerally, and filled with fresh berry fruit. Hot Picks
