Community Tasting Notes (11) Avg Score: 93.5 points

  • Deep, dark reddish-purple, essentially opaque in color. Nose was initially reticent but eventually developing with airing into a full, forward & aromatic nose of ripe fruit aromas of dark cherries, blackberries & plums with overtones of floral notes of roses & earthy/dusty, cocoa, coffee grounds, dried herbs, some mint & anise, olives, minerals & spice notes of cloves with some vanilla/toasty oak notes in the background. Full bodied with a very good concentration of well balanced & smooth textured, ripe fruit flavors of sour cherries, blackberries & dark plums with cocoa, coffee, spices, herbs, minerals & a hint of vanilla/toasty oak. Long lingering finish. Drinks quite well at present with decanting & extended airing but should develop further with additional aging at which time it may merit a higher score (95+).

  • Next day from undecanted bottle. One glass left. Touches of light sediment. 27 hours of slow ox did it well. Fully open. Nose of cola and wood with bloody strawberry.

Palate of wood, which is a huge turnoff. The wood is overbearing. I’m going to have to recant all I said about this wine. If your fruit is so good, why add wood like this? Makes no sense. I’m imagining how this might taste with no wood. Can’t. Big disappointment. There’s smoke, there’s charr, there’s wood. Might as well smoke a cigar before drinking this, so that the palate can’t taste it.

  • Powerful nose of earthen strawberry, fine baking spices, tart cherries/cherry pie, density, more fruit than earth.

Palate of cherry pie, spices, citrus, fine cakes, some bitter of tannins.
There’s a component of wood, cooling of tobacco, essence of newly stitched leather, expensive English saddle for Ventasso, blood, drying spices of cured meats, white pepper.

The juice layers on the pepper with more sips and becomes more bloody, peppered prosciutto, humidor, Nicaraguan Tatuaje Nuevitas, (If paired here, you will find multiple similarities, but don’t recommend it as the puffs will taint your palate for days, but maybe not a bad thing as the swigs will prompt your palate into something stronger, say Dalmore 18.)

3 hours in the nose becomes more bloody, and its sanguine nature reflects the reason for the name of the varietal: Sangiovese.

Alte Valle Della Greve, the source, the rocky land where the blood of the gods are sucked out of the soil, where Chianti’s heart beats and this source all leave an imprint on its imbiber to feel its connection, to know why this was given, and in this moment give thanks to Vittorio Fiore for keeping these 80 year old vines the health to produce such a moment in eternity, where my soul can ruminate, connect and recognize this ancient vibration.

  • Vinturi-decanted and serially tasted over the ensuing 2-3 hours with tomato-based pasta, this deep garnet Sangiovese is a great companion to the Italian cuisine. Loaded with dark cherry and blackberry fruit on both the nose and palate, it adds notes of tar, bramble leaf, smoke and dried earth. Full-bodied, freshly acidic, judiciously oaked and with well-integrated alcohol (listed as 14.5%), it coats its flavors with firm tannins that are pervasive throughout the solid mid-palate and lengthy finish. If you choose to pop the cork at this early stage, give it at least two hours in decanter. Even better, give it a couple of years in the cellar so that the tannins can further assimilate. Drink 2025-2034.
