Drank 2 bottles side by side. One was tasting pretty bad, but was not TCA or anything. Surprisingly different bottles. The other bottle was amazing after about 6 hours in the decanter.

good fruit; sloe berries, plums, black currants, licorice more pronounced now - starting to feel a bit harsh and astringent - probably over the top in that aspect, but this bottle still felt clearly like it was better structured (longer finish, more acidity, some tannic structure) than the 1998 which we we drinking at the same time. Still everyone favored the 98 on the account of the round and sweet fruit and the integrated complexity.

A very fine wine indeed. There is still some fine tannic structure, although most of it has melted in to the marrow of this wine; a concentrated - but not heavy - core of black fruit and berries, carried by a long energetic acidity. There are, perhaps, some licorice and leather notes; but only as light perfume imprint. The wine is perhaps past its peak, but if so, the decline is slow and very pleasant.
We thoroughly enjoyed this with some cevapcici, jalapeno and zucchini stir fry, potatoes fried in duck fat and some baby portabellas and crisp bacon: not the lightest fare.

Aging nicely and bottle drinking good. Perfume is developing beautifully.
*Thought it would get better, but just closed up and went flat.
