Opened two hours before dinner. 2007s are definitely in the zone, such a lovely, open-knit vintage. This was before the style change at Roty, on opening it had a sausage, bacon-like smell that was from the char of the wood I suppose. Eventually the heavy extraction and wood use integrated with air and the wine came into balance. Put on weight to show dark red cherries and a savoury character that developed in the glass brilliantly. Classic Gevrey in the dusty old school style.

Pop and poured. At home. Appearance is clear, pale intensity, ruby colour with garnet rim. Legs. Nose is clean, medium+ intensity, with aromas of earth, forest floor dirt, iron minerality, dark meat, dark red cherries, spice. Developed. On the palate, dry, mouth-watering high acidity, medium alcohol (13%), integrated medium+ tannins, medium+ body. Medium+ flavour intensity, with flavours of earth, savoury dark meat, spice, dark chocolate bits, crunchy ripe dark red cherries, iron minerality. Long expansile finish with occasional bitter dark herb. Very good quality. Very good Gevrey Chambertin example. Village drinking like a Premier Cru. Enjoy now and over the next 3 years. No need to wait any more. Made by Joseph Roty. Before he unfortunately passed on in 2008. Excellent Gevrey Village plot near Charmes-Charmbertin.

Slightly less complex the Le Jarrons we had but still very enjoyable. This is darker, murkier, dryer, with more pronounce tannins, more masculine, flexing more muscle than its Savigny counterpart. This can age much longer as well. I'd say let it sleep another couple of years.

By the glass at Corner House. Immensely overpriced, but at least thus was a really nice Gevrey village, especially in the context of the lighter vintage. The nose had a nice steely minerality and a touch of earthiness underlying its red berry notes. On the palate, fresh acidity and pinpricks of very fine tannins danced around light but nicely framed flavours of dark cherries seasoned with a touch earthy mineral lending it a masculine feel. On the finish, some warm spice and a little twist of brambly herb trailed into the distance. A charmer. Drinking nicely young too. With its bright 2007 acidity, this paired nicely with some A4 Wagyu beef, cutting through the fat of the meat and refreshing the palate.

The color was bit on the light side for a Roty. The nose was fragrant, with some earthy overtones. On the palate, ripe red fruit, smooth, with good balance and surprising complexity for a village wine from this vintage. The wine is in a good zone, but may not last too much longer. A nice treat.
