This bottle 2006 Penfolds is a sad tale. This bottle is on the back end of its life with only the nose left to show what once was probably a very good wine. Basically, touches of olive and earth remain with little to no fruit to speak of. Don't know if it wasn't stored well but definently not anywhere near what a Barossa Shiraz should be in its prime.

Gloriously rich blackberry and fruitcake, along with hints of leather. The structure is softening but still has enough grip and feshness to balance the fruit. Long and complex. Drinking now and over the next decade.

Full-bodied, richly fruited plum, fruit cake and dark chocolates, cloves and earth. Slightly gritty and bitter tannin profile and dried coconut /burnt wood finish. Very Penfolds in style, similar to a Bin 28.

Had with beef tenderloin. 2 hour decant. Garnet. Still fresh and so balanced. Red fruit, herb, asphalt, complex. Long finish.

Great wine, good balance, not too sweet. Touch of vanilla, long finish, tannins rounded with age.
