Big bold Cherry with some Plummy notes. Decanted for an hour or so which allowed the wine to open up after the initial touch dry taste. Earthy notes on the finish with supple soft tannins. Went extremely well with Beef Wellington.

{cork, 14.5%} Lots of plum and blueberry fruit, maturing nicely. Was decanted for about half an hour prior to consumption. More about the rich fruit and chocolatey oak than real complexity of flavour, but it’s still impressive enough at twenty years. Medium powdery tannins, medium acidity. I enjoyed this very much but there’s nothing very subtle about it. Medium length finish. Not sure it was an especially good vintage for this label, and I think they were still finding the style after only five vintages or so. Will keep, but I’m not sure if there’s any more interest to come.

Quite a range of reviews in last 6 months, which I suspect is testament to the uneven quality of cork as a seal. I believe this wine was not under screw cap in any market. Cork is a truly unreliable seal and we can only hope that it will soon to be treated as the pre-industrial curio that it is.
Note made about 4 hours after opening, I chose not to decant so as to allow me more time to enjoy what seemed to be a fully mature wine. I have scored this as on the cusp betwixt Excellent and Outstanding on the CT scale.
Colour is an almost impenetrable, inky, red-black. Few signs of age - no brick.
On the hooter one gets a typical well pressed Penfolds nose of dark plums, near jammy black fruits and some winegum. I also get a slight rancio character, which the colour does not warn me of.
The palate is powerful, an iron fist in a velvet glove. Not fragile. This is all about powerful fruit - oak plays a small influence. The finish goes on forever. This is a delicious wine. For some it may be a little syrupy and I confess I probably fall into that group. What that means is that a glass is ample, but the experience is deep and sublime. A wine for libertines (a rather good Cult song). Worth seeking out and perhaps more pleasurable than Grange, because it stands just a smidgin on the right side of gargantuan.

Simply magnificent Barossa Shiraz. Patience truly rewarded. Glorious dark fruit and beautiful glycerine like texture with layers of sophistication that has emerged from the massive robust and unruly youth I first tasted in Santa Monica back in 2005!

Inky dark purple, with fine particles after straining and decanting. Nose was a bit astringent/menthol. Was delicious even on opening but softened over an hour. Blackberry, blueberry, slight menthol/eucalyptus. A bit of leather/earthiness. Lucious across the tongue. Slight astringency softened overtime. Softening tannins. Long finish. 3 more to drink and 4 more vintages in the cellar. This one can go another few years.
