Community Tasting Notes (4) Avg Score: 90 points

  • Experience not unlike that of MC above. Decanted 1.5 hours before dinner, was good with dinner, but not great -- pleasant dark fruits in medium-weight body with some sensuality, but not a lot of Echézeaux character. (90) Came back to the remainders four hours after decanting and the wine had begun to open up and show some Echézeaux spice. (92+) A wine to either decant long, long in advance of serving or hold for a good deal longer. One bottle still remaining here. Cellared since original release.

  • Slight run up on cork. Splash decanted 2 hours. This was good at 2 hours and very good at 3 hours. Nice medium-red color that does not show its age. Good cool fruit on the nose and still some lingering structure and acidity on the finish but overall the best - and unfortunately the last - of my bottles. Continues a good run with the 1993s. Although bigger, this was not as balanced as the Bouchard Reignots we had recently. I think that well stored bottles might improve just a bit over the next few years but I would start drinking now with a 3 hour decant. A-

  • Medium-dark red. Out of the bottle the nose was very expressive, showing dark fruits, spices, earth. First few sips were really exciting, with great fruit and a leaner, more acidic finish expected for the vintage. However, with some time this shut down a bit, and started to show more of its tannin and acid than fruit. Unclear if we had given it another hour of air if it would have come around - but overall a very good wine that was better out of the bottle than with an hour of air. A-

  • Jasper Morris Book Launch (The Ledbury): A bit of rotten egg stink suggests some reduction. Vigorous swirling got rid of it eventually to reveal a very primary, fresh red fruit, muscular wine. Good acid. Again this has a long future ahead of it. Grivot really seemed to make some good 93s based on this and a Clos Vougeot I had a few years ago. Even though lots of people point to 1998 as the start of their renaissance.
