  • Unfortunately this had a funky taste and smell across, not that we could argue to send it back but also hopefully this is not characteristic of the wine. We put it under expensive unfortunate results and choose not to rate.

  • I have survived the last few months only through the application of my personal traits of doggedness and misanthropy, coupled with dedication to fine wines and compulsive masturbation. Barolo tends to compliment these noble, dare I say it, Aurelian, qualities.

Unlike one reviewer, I found this wine compelling from the moment I opened it, although there is no question that it asks for about 6 hours open to fully reveal its qualities. I was too busy with various of my personal activities to decant this and, in truth, I don't believe it needs it.

The colour is quite deep, with the characteristic Barolo brick and orange at the rim. The depth in the middle of the glass tells a tale that is borne out on nose and palate.

The aromas and flavours are intense and long and command attention, even from my compulsive tendencies. Lively aromas of plum and strawberry, rose petals and then the contrast of brooding dark wood, some leather and spice.

The tannins are still mighty and this is a wine that has, perhaps, 20 more years ahead of it. It is true that to enjoy Barolo you must also learn to love tannin. This does not mean surrendering all discrimination. Green tannins are still flaws, for example. But here the tannins tell their own worthy tale, as well as giving you the bass line, but not in some plodding way; attention yields a tune below the tune. The tannins here are beautifully ripe and you may find that the fruit is almost a distraction as you dive deep, savouring these beasties. I am reminded of Cognac and black tea and even the smell of my oak table.

For me there is a genuine sense of sadness when I finish this bottle.

Do make sure that you drink it at a good temperature and I beg you to use a Riedel Bordeaux shape, or equivalent.

  • Tonight I thought this was absolutely fantastic. Incredible depth of flavour. Tannin completely integrated. Classic dark cherry and violets with a stunning nose. Silky smooth which is part of pleasure as many barolos are more old school and rustic. As you would expect a fab freshness at the end. Drinking wonderfully right now - in such a great spot.
