  • A pale orange red. Packs a lot on the nose and immediately identifiable as Rayas and an excellent representation of range. This would’ve done even better with another 12 hours of air time, as it got strikingly elegant on day 2. Some prunes, candied strawberries, potpourri and lots of spices in the mouth. The wine gave a lot of oomph and a big dash of sweet fruit, but on the palate, weightless and airy, leaving almost no evidence of the suggest “jamminess” as a result of those exciting peppers and spice dancing on the tongue. Got a lot left in the tank.

  • Double-blind. Same bottle as Melvin and Pavel. Unusual nose, clearly not Pinot Noir but I couldn’t identify Grenache on the nose though. Lively and fairly sweet, almost too sweet for me, as someone mentioned it’s an acquired taste, well, I am not really a big fan. Elegant and good balance just not my style.

  • Jason's birthday: Same bottle as Melvin. Superb showing and in my eyes head and shoulders above all the other, very good wines during this great evening. Clearly whole clusters on nose and attack but not overdone, and then sweet red fruit made me initially think of a very ripe Burgundy vintage like perhaps 2009. This had also a Burgundian weightlessness on the mid palate but ultimately this combination of red fruit and sweetness in a clearly mature wine steered the discussion away from Pinot and Melvin brought up Rayas. Very long lingering finish. Superb wine and much more refined than the Fonsalette preceeding it.

  • Jason's birthday: Cloudy colour with unacceptable levels of VA, jammy and candied nose with high acidity and sweetness. Guessed Jura red but when revealed that it wasn’t, could only be a Rayas stable wine. Similarly high alcohol levels to the Fonsalette that gave kirsch liquor notes, but the complete opposite in terms of structure.

  • Slightly more fruit driven and younger seeming than the 08 Rayas next to it. At first this was quite closed on the nose, but a slow ox opened it up beautifully.
