  • This has a mature garnet appearance, with a nose showing black tea and cassis, but also quite a bit of brett and some oxidation. The palate is clearly over the hill, with fully resolved structure and tired, watery dark fruits. I enjoyed many bottles of this four to five years ago, when it was a fine bargain at $8 a pop. The intervening years have unfortunately not been kind.

  • SFwine double-blind tasting at Dave's (San Francisco): Tons of barnyard on the nose initially, but this blew off in about an hour or so revealing sweet/tart black fruits, sous bois, slightly mushroomy, suggesting a nearly mature wine. Light bodied, with a delicate palate presence and flavors of tart (but ripe) black fruits, earth, white pepper, with good freshness and acid. Fine-grained, mostly resolved tannins. Good stuff, and showing better than the two previous bottles i've tasted of this wine. I brought this. Update: Took the remaining 1/3 of the bottle home. The next night the wine was just sensational. Not a hint of brett, just pure black cherry, iron, sous bois, incredibly light and delicate body, improved depth and length. Added a score.

  • 100% Piedirosso. Color is a dark ruby red, lightening a bit at the edges. Lovely nose of sour cherries with a faint hint of blackerry and mint. On the palate this has decent weight with subtle mature flavors of sour cherry and earth and assertive but soft, mostly resolved tannins. Acidity is in balance. Commensurate with its age, the fruit is more of an essence than a dominant, forward element. Finish is approximately 10 seconds. This was at its best with approximately 45 minutes of air, from that point it began to dry up. Considering this was picked up on closeout for $8, really a nice, balanced showing for a 5 year-old wine that is usually drank with a year or two of release. I will definitely pick up a few more bottles, but drink up within the year.
